You aren’t off base, Deb. It was a total debacle for the whole coaching staff Saturday. They had two weeks to prepare and because they had already played all the other teams this year they probably spent the most time studying the Commanders. I did see improvements in MCDC’s coaching from 23 to 24 so there is light at the end the tunnel.

I was one of the ones leading the arguments, but the injuries kept coming. You can't expect to beat quality teams when you are playing a defensive squad in the 4th quarter that is something you might see in a preseason game.
I think it was something like by the time the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Lions were effectively fielding 1/4 of their original D-line rotation, 1/3 of their secondary rotation, and roughly 1/2 of their linebacker rotation (and got one part of that rotation back merely one game ago).

If you were to take the Lions IR list, and remove equivalent impact players from any other team in the playoffs, how many of those teams even make the postseason? Maybe the Bills, and only because the AFC East was genuinely ass. The Chiefs possibly?

      • I will say that this board is much more reasoned approach to the loss and the season in general than the bullshit that you see on social media and I am sure is making the rounds on local sports talk radio in Detroit.

I think most of us were hopeful but not truly optimistic. I think the season was doomed when Hutch went down. I think it was Forsh who said that he would have bet on the Lions going to the Superbowl prior to the injury.. We all knew it deep down, but they kept on pulling games out of their asses even after the injuries continued to pile up.

In reality, this season was a masterful job by the coaches and front office.

I didn't think they could get to the Superbowl, but man, they kept giving this asshole reason to believe. Ha!

I was not devastated or for that matter surprised by the loss. Last year didn't bother that much either. I felt they were playing with house money

This year they overachieved for most of the year, but they have built a strong core and culture. That will continue.

All I have ever wanted for this team is to be competitive, have a legitimate shot every year and give me a reason to be excited and look forward to each game.

I believe that is where they are.

Maybe they'll win it all. Maybe they won't. But they are in the conversation.

        That is a good thing.

        • They broke one of my cardinal rules, do not win the October Superbowl. They overachieved after the injuries piled up, but prior to that they were one of the best teams ever according to DVOA at mid October. But interestingly half of the 6 teams listed with them fell short of winning the Superbowl. That includes the undefeated Patriots.

I think that they peaked with the MN win (the same as MN peaked the week before when they celebrated the packers win like it was the Superbowl)

I know that the emphasis was on being the top seed, but it kind of felt like that was the main mission and when they achieved that, there was a let down and they thought they had a pass to the big game.

            Maybe. Maybe not.

This!!! This is why I come to these boards instead of listening to sports talk radio and reading other social media platforms. This Forum is filled with some of the most knowledgeable people that I know; not only on the Lions but football in general. The over-reaction posts on social media to what happened Saturday is absurd. The fact that sports talk radio speaks now that Goff can't win the big one and we need to move on from him is ridiculous.

Holmes will find a way to bring in the talent that is needed and Campbell will find a way to replace Johnson (who by the way I hope the dysfunctional bears organization frustrates him to no end) and Glenn (who was a bit stubborn for my tastes sticking with things without adjustments, blitzing, etc). The overall talent on this team is the best I have ever seen on a Lions team in my lifetime (58 years). The culture is built and will actually drive players to come here to play. Sure we may never get to 15-2 again, but there will be far better days ahead than worse ones. The loss last season to the 49'ers affected me way worse than this year.

All emotions can be traced back to two basic ones........love and fear.

              • I saw plenty of fans of the other division teams saying the brains of the operation was Johnson and Glenn and now the Lions will revert to a “poverty franchise”. It really shows how stupid these fans are.

                • I mean peak like offensively.and defensively. The DVOA defensively for the team looked like it was going down the Top Thrill Dragster since mid October and it really dropped when Anzalone got hurt. By that Washington game they were in the mindset you often saw in the first couple years where they had to pull out all stops to score because the defense couldn't be trusted.

Emotionally they may have peaked in week 18 but they were just not the same team. They have got to get to the playoffs in the future with a team that has a defense good enough that they aren't afraid of punting to a good offensive team.

                  • Goff may not be able to win the big one, until he does that, the critics won't shut up. The people who are saying you have to move on from Jared Goff don't understand what they are saying. Move on to what? They have to see this out. They have 6 All Pro players, this is not rebuild time

Goff had a great year but he failed Saturday. The whole operation has to be tighter. You might have to win a shootout, but the Lions are in the position where they have had to come from behind throwing the ball. In those situations you are going to force things.

The offense was a debacle for 5 plays that just all broke about as bad as possible - and of those 5, I'd only say 2 were definitely bad play calls (the sack/fumble and the Jamo pass). Other than that it was exactly what we thought the offense would be, running up and down the field with relative ease.

The defense was a catastrophe - I don't think Glenn was good on Saturday, but at that point you're sort of just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.

                      • I just felt like there was too much "who are we going to play in the Super Bowl" and not enough "Hey this Washington team can beat us and we better give it our all." I saw too many articles and predictions saying Washington had no chance, which was ridiculous given the state of the Lions defense....Alot of Dan C's post game speeches were "we find a way to win" and "we are destined and built for this" that I just think the team didn't think there was any possible way they could lose this game, but they lost badly.

                        • I actually think the biggest criticism I’ve seen of the offense is that Gibbs only had 14 carries and that in the future he should get like 25. He’s proven himself to be one of the top three backs in the NFL and there’s no reason to split 50/50 with Monty. Certainly starting the game with Gibbs on the bench is not ideal.
