When thinking about this game allegedly being meaningless, think of what they said about the group Oasis. Noel wrote the lyrics like they meant nothing and Liam sang them like they meant everything.
Of course no one likes it. It's illogical to play starters. MCDC is who he is. Gotta take the good with the bad. That this game means something to them for revenge is a fair point being brought up to explain it (not justify, just explain). I don't think that really matters to Campbell though. I just think give it your all every time is his personality. He tends to only change his ways when something bad happens and it smacks him in the face.
