I don’t understand and disagree with the excuses for the defense. It’s a little delusional IMO. The Lions defense lost the game yesterday. The reasoning is a combination of things and it mainly has to due to the personnel due to injuries. How about not giving up 3 straight TDs to start the game? Really, the Lions defense’s only stop was 1 punt early in the 2nd half. Lucky the Bills stopped themselves with a false start and then a missed FG on a different possession in the game.

The Lions offense eventually settled in and made it a one score game. It’s too unrealistic to have to pressure of scoring 49+ to win a game.

Stats, eye test, or whatever measure you want to look at. Historically terrible showing by the Lions defense yesterday and it’s a red flag going forward with McNeill and Davis done for the season. All I can add is the injury situation is bad luck for the team and our fanbase. We might have to adjust our season expectations due to that reason. From expectations of contending to we should be grateful if they make the NFC championship game again. Bad luck and randomness, it happens in life…

Bills offense: 48 points, 559 yards, 1 punt, 0 turnovers.

    Home Alone Kevin GIF

To end on a positive note, Lions roster should be better in 2025. The contracts situation doesn’t hurt the Lions until 2026 or 2027. Will historically bad luck with injuries collapse their chances again? We can only hope it doesn’t.

Bad: Goff 494. 5 TDs, 0 INT, 118.9. Be better.
Bad: 4th string defense couldn't dominate a legit MVP QB. Be better.
Ugly: Ex QB announcer saying he could find 10 year-olds to complete that Detroit screen pass.
Uggggly: Ex QB announcer that ran a 5.01 calling out current QB sub-5 second speed, while he runs for a 1st down.
Where are we going; and what's up with this hand basket?

I'm going to be real curious to see how Glenn responds to this. He's dedicated to playing man, but if I recall correctly he switched it up last year with more zone given the struggles that they had with the CBs and coverage in general. I know the secondary was healthy yesterday, and this is a little bit of hindsight, but with the Bill having a good receiving TE, possession receiver, a good pass catching RB in in Cook, and a QB who makes plays out of structure, maybe yesterday would have been a day to throw a curveball and play some zone or dial up some weird shit.

Some of the struggles probably can be chalked up to so many new faces getting reps in the front 7, so you hope to see improvement. But the Bills just put on tape the way every offense the rest of the year is going to attack this defense. And sure, these other teams don't have Allen, but they also don't have Buffalo's defense.

I’ve been fine with Campbell’s aggressive calls, but not that early onside kick. The numbers don’t work. The chances that the defense makes a stop, or the Bills have a drop or penalty and stop themselves, has to be better than the 7% chance to recover the kick.

Its good to know (but equally shit) that there are utter bawbag announcers across the pond like some of the soccer twats over here.

My favourite (that would be favorite for the absent Jaadam) …. is a player, now announcer, who once SKYED a ball over the bar from THREE yards in an Edinburgh derby match…….. he regularly says, “Oh that’s unforgivable” while announcing games.
Yes Mikey, and you’re the fucking guru in that dept!

I think being upset with some of his calls are part of the package deal. It’s never going to work out 100% of the time; we just have to be Ok with 50, 60 or 70%.

Agreed, especially with the new kickoff rules, just too much of a longshot since you can’t surprise anybody with the onside. Would have preferred to see them do some aggressive, high variance shit on D. You risk giving up the big plays but they were already doing that. At least you get the chance to get a tipped ball or bad snap or anything.

I see your soccer twat, and raise you an ex-Lion QB "analyst" that ran out. of. the. back. of. the. endzone.

I just want to avoid the onside kick as much as possible. I kind of don't think it turned out that bad because of the return they got the ball back right away and they scored right away. By the 4th quarter the Lions were going to score on every possession. You just need more possessions, but the problem is the onside kick is suboptimal for more possessions.

As bad as the defense played, I believe they had a much better than 7-8 percent chance at getting the stop but that much.

Both onside kicks were about as well kicked as you can hope for on an onside kick.

Going for the onside kick so early kind of reminds me of the statistical model on pulling the goalie in hockey. One model suggested teams should pull the goalie far earlier and keep in pulled. In the long run you make out but you also lose a lot more games by a lopsided score.

The good thing is that the Lions defensively has been here before so it’ll be interesting to see how Glenn adjusts but with the horses he has right now, he can’t really play man to man effectively the way he would like. As bad as things look right now the sky isn’t quite falling for the Lions yet. Their high powered offense is still intact and it’s been proven that you can still make the Super Bowl with a top offense and weak defense. The 2006 Colts, 2007 Giants, and 2009 Saints have done it but it’s a uphill battle for the Lions at this point.

Its go be extremely hard especially if they somehow can’t get healthy on defense, blow the #1 seed and maybe the Division. I’s not impossible for them to get it together and make a run. Goff and the offense is go have to play out of their mind to make that kind of Superbowl run possible.

Its going to be hard implementing a more zone based scheme this late in the season with a lot of new guys. Communication in a zone scheme is paramount. They might have to do it, but perhaps not as much as you think. When Josh Allen is on like he has been, it's going to face problems for the Lions defense more than any other matchup They will have to keep it in mind for the Superbowl.

The thing with Allen is that you can bait him into making mistakes... but you have to make a commitment and have the personnel on the back end to be able to frequently switch from man to zone almost from play to play. And you have to be able to mask your coverage by giving the appearance of one or the other pre-snap, and switching it. And then, even if you do everything right, he still might break containment, and run for 20+ yards or deliver a perfect dime into tight coverage for a big gain.

That said, if you're giving up almost 50, there's more than a little bit of defensive bed shitting going on as well.

The team just isn't very good right now and they might have to give up on the "bully ball' scheme they want to play. They ain't bullying anyone ATM.
