The Houston Texans have activated wide receiver Nico Collins to the roster, the team announced Saturday.
Four weeks after placing the receiver on the injured reserve, Collins is back and is expected to play Sunday next when the Texans host the Detroit Lions at NRG Stadium on prime-time television.
Before Collins' hamstring injury, he led the league with 567 receiving yards. He also had 32 catches and three touchdowns.
The news of his return is a major boost for the Texans' offense, which has struggled with pass protection over the past three weeks. Stroud was sacked a career-high eight times last week against the New York Jets.
His presence should help, because he's their biggest threat in the quick game.
In fact, he's their biggest threat all over. He accounted for 30% of their total offense before his injury.
But in the four games he has missed, the Texans are 2-2 and have not reached 300 yards passing in any game.
Collins practiced only once this week, and that was in Friday's walk-through. It's hard to imagine he'd be the focal part in their offense as he was before he went down, but he'd likely still have big role.
Collins first suffered the injury in the Texans' win over the Buffalo Bills on Oct 6. He caught a 67-yard touchdown pass from quarterback C.J. Stroud, and came up limping just as he crossed the end zone.
He was put on the injured reserve a few days later and began the rehab process. The Texans took the cautious approach with Collins to make sure he didn't re-aggravate the injury.
The Texans also activated defensive end Jerry Hughes, who was on the injured reserve with a hip injury. They downgraded backup Jeff Okudah to out, as he continues to nurse a quad injury. Okudah, who is also on the injured reserve, has not been added to the roster.
The corresponding move was releasing cornerback D'Angelo Ross.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
