I mean, I've seen head to head shots get people tossed. Quite frequently.

Right from first incident? No. That is true; that rarely happens, and frankly that didn't deserve an outright ejection. It appeared the refs on the field didn't consider it ejection worthy either. Someone in New York had a bug in their ass, I guess.

But one way to prevent that from happening was not doing stupid in the first place. Branch put himself in a dumb situation with a hit that was unnecessary.

In theory, a player can be ejected on their first personal foul if the foul is considered especially bad. It very, very rarely happens, usually in situations which looked like malicious attempt to injure or something extremely beyond the pale. An example of someone getting tossed on first foul was with Green Bay, in fact, when Walker shoved one of the Lions training staff a couple years back.

Branch's hit... was not that. Even the refs were content to let Branch play on judging from their initial response. It appears someone in New York buzzed in and tossed Branch.

Why? Fuck if I know.
