Yep, you find out how good the defense is without Hutch. They play @ Vikings, vs. Titans and @ Packers before the deadline. Two of those teams are the most likely competitors for the NFC crown and are teams that can test your passing defense and that's what we are talking about with this loss of Hutch.

And importantly, very few teams think they are truly out of it on October 14th that they are dangling players. He probably is burning the phone lines right now on edges that are not signed or on practice squad guys. None of those guys are difference makers.

My guess is that if the Lions keep pressuring QBs, they aren't going to even consider making a big swing. For good or for ill, I don't think this coaching staff values the sack in the way that the fans do. To Glenn and Campbell, it's a nice added bonus, but the primary goal is to force the QB out of rhythm and off schedule.

How we play the next 3 weeks, even with the Titans game, will tell us moving forward what the Detroit Lions will do before the NFL trade deadline.

If we're at least 1-2 after the 3 games, then I could see Brad Holmes making a move or two.

If we're 2-1, as long as the wins are NFC and Division wins against Minnesota and Green Bay, then there won't be any major moves.

I think we really need to get Melifonwu back, he's a really good slot blitzer. But the Achilles could last all season for him unfortunately.

Maybe the Jags will punt on the season and trade us the JAG they took when they passed on Hutch. Of course we all want Maxx but the price may be astronomical.

Cowboys’ Jourdan Lewis calls out Lions’ use of tackle-eligible plays: ‘A terrible joke’
Detroit used a tackle-eligible formation nine times Sunday, including on the first play of the game.

ARLINGTON — At the start of the week, Lions coach Dan Campbell was asked if his team would use a tackle-eligible formation on the first play of their contest with the Cowboys. Campbell said the Lions were still putting the game plan together.

During the Lions’ dominating 47-9 victory over the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon, the visiting team used the formation nine times, including on the first play of the game.


Detroit used it on three consecutive plays in the third quarter and on a fourth-and-3 from the Dallas 31 with the game out of reach.


“It’s a terrible joke,” cornerback Jourdan Lewis said. “They were trying to be sarcastic with it. They were trying to embarrass us, but I mean at the end of the day, they can do whatever they want to do. They get the ball they can have any formation they want to, it’s our job to stop it.”

The tackle-eligible play became a topic coming into Sunday’s game based on the wild ending of a late-season game between these teams last year. After Detroit pulled within one late in that game, the Lions used an extra lineman during a two-point conversion that was wiped out by a penalty. The referees ruled one of the Lions’ players didn’t report properly and was ineligible to touch the ball.


It set off a wild scene during the Cowboys’ victory and the Lions were upset with the officials.

Fast forward to Sunday, and the Lions made sure they used a formation with at least one extra lineman numerous times.

“We noticed it,” Lewis said. “We definitely noticed it, but at the end of the day, they beat us. They can do whatever they want to do, hook and laterals, whatever, our job is to not let that happen.”



Late in the third quarter, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown lateraled to right tackle Penei Sewell who ran to the Cowboys 3 for a first down. But a penalty erased the play when the center Frank Ragnow was ruled as an ineligible man downfield.

A late play raised some sportsmanship questions when Lions backup quarterback Hendon Hooker attempted a pass with 8:02 left in the fourth quarter, completing a 19-yard pass to Kalif Raymond. On the same drive, the Lions went to a tackle-eligible play on a fourth-and-3 from the 31. Instead of taking a knee, or attempting a field goal, Hooker dropped back to pass. He was sacked by K.J. Henry.

“Hey, look, they wanted to prove a point and they got it,” Lewis said. “They proved a point and we got to go out there and show people that’s now what we are. They did their job today and we didn’t.”

As for the tackle eligible plays, they were certainly leaning into it a bit, but Skipper reports as eligible several times most games. 9 sounds like a lot but it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s regularly at 5-6 on an average week.

I don't know that Houston will get much of a shot unless they are in clear passing downs - like 3rd and 10+. They might go just all big with Levi and Paschal as the starters, and Wingo getting some reps too, and then fill in with Ukwu and maybe O'Connor from the PS..

I did a quick review of the bad teams to see who might be an option of somebody goes into sell mode and here's a brief list. Again, don't think the Lions would give up a high pick for any of these guys, and it's slim pickings for any vet that would get significant rotation snaps.

I thought about Cameron Jordan for a minute given the ties to NO, but feels like Saints fans would revolt if he was dealt, plus he seems to have finally fallen off with only 2 sacks last year and zero this year.
