Second coming of Stafford?
well you better build an elite defense around him.
Get a hall of fame receiver, and good back.
Then ya got something to work with
People need to quit acting like a QB not starting until their late 20's is a huge problem. If they think that Penix is a franchise QB and are right about it then it's a brilliant pick for their future. God forbid you only get 12 years of a franchise QB instead of 16. So terrible.

It will continue to be a question because, like, nobody's done it? QBs that are good enough to play in the NFL play early. QBs that develop later in their career do it through accumulating snaps, not sitting on the bench. The next QB that gets drafted high, sits on then bench for 2 or 3 years and doesn't get on the field until they are 26 or 27 and goes on to a long term successful career will be a first.

Agree.
If Penix Jr. gives the Falcons quality QB play from let’s say age 27 to 35, it’s a huge win. Penix Jr. will have the luxury of taking his development slow. Part of the reason that leads to QB busts is the situation. Highly drafted QBs being thrown into the fire as a rookie. Bad coaching, rosters, or OC changes too.
I don’t mind this at all for the Falcons or any team. PATIENCE. Sad to say our division rival Packers might be on to something with QB development…. It sucks for us.
It's funny, the guy who you'd could point to as an example of mid-20s success story is Cousins. He sat on the bench for 3 years before getting his shot at 27. But he was a 4th round pick, and was behind a top 2 pick.
Steve Young didn’t really get his best chance at success until he turned 30.
He spent 2 years starting in the USFL and then another couple of years with Tampa. He had to sit and wait his turn after going to SF, but he wasn't a just sitting on the bench from the jump.

First, I've dealt with Kirk Cousins and he may be surprised a bit, but never angry. He is a pro. If his job now entails teaching Penix the ropes, then that is what he is getting $ 45 million per year to do.
Second, no one here is mentioning the trade value that Cousins would have should Penix ball out in, say, his second year. Look at the haul Seattle got for Wilson or Houston got for Watson. IF Penix is as good as Atlanta thinks he is, then Atlanta's situation in the near term is going to look most like the Patriots when they had Drew Bledsoe and drafted Brady. After Brady took the job, the Patriots traded Bledsoe to the Bills for a first-round pick (turned out to be # 4 overall). That is not chopped liver.
I also think that Atlanta has been in the wilderness for some time with their QB room, and they, probably more than most, realize a good QB determines outcomes more than any other position in pro football.
This was a very risky pick for ATL, and I'll bet it doesn't work out. But if it does work out, it makes sense.

That's the thing, the examples are always about upgrading and risk management. Farve was acting flaky and the protected themselves with a late first pick, grab Rodgers. Rodgers is acting flaky and they picked up Love to protect themselves. Late round picks. Chiefs had Smith on a little bit more of a prove it deal and saw a guy they absolutely loved, started him immediately his second season. Cousins, Hooker. Good talents picked up later rounds as insurance.
Even then we're could go either way with Love. Could GB have won another Superbowl if they picked a WR for Rodgers in those later seasons, maybe a defender. But you aren't expected to be picking a perennial pro-bowler at that spot like #8.
That is supposed to be a major impact player, now a players whose best case scenario isn't playing till his 4th season, for the QB that is probably the most ready now.
Nothing short of Penix eventually starting, and going on to win a SB is acceptable at this point. Even if has a career as good as Marino or Kelly. The what ifs of not getting Rome, or a DE, or CB, or OT at that pick will sit in there. Because they backed up a vault to get Cousins to win a SB and immediately decided that it wasn't worth getting the team support, but to use a top 10 pick to pick his replacement. If Penix doesn't get a ring, it will always be thought that they would have if they just supported Cousins.
That's not to say Penix can't work out there. But just because the dumbest move didn't totally fail, won't excuse the move. No amount of Penix succeeding with anything less than a SB makes that move anything but dumb.
I tend to agree with Mainevent, but I would caution on using the never done it before rational. There is a clearly an NFL development problem of quarterbacks. Some of these guys are too young and flame out of the league before they are ready for a proper chance.
Look at Goff, he started early and was a punchline in the league and then he matured and developed.

I am not going to continue to rag on it. But Seattle traded Wilson with little in dead cap left. Denver is eating 90 million, during their new rookie's first two seasons, because of how bad it is to pay a QB and immediately move on from him. The Falcons are 100 million into Cousins no matter what there is no good situation for the Falcons in which Penix starts before year 4. Lessen the blow maybe. But getting a couple of picks (not the ones you are thinking) isn't going to make them happy to eat that much money.
The important part is they should have if they rated Penix that highly. Used most of that money on someone else in FA. Get a Darnold, Flacco, or something for 10 million or so then did what they needed to make sure they got Penix.
