I just don't see that much of a difference in the 4 decisions except the outcome of the play. It is a lot less about Dan Campbell and more that I like aggressive coaching. When you are aggressive you are going to win more decisions than you lose. But you are going to lose decisions. It's very hard to pick and choose.

There were times this year where I was like, "I don't know man - I wouldn't do that..." And Dan pulled it out. Good on him. I don't mind being aggressive so long as it is also strategic and he picks his spots, not just go all Leroy Jenkins.

But I didn't make a thread about it at the time - so I guess I can't have an opinion going forward.
But he's not going Leroy Jenkins on these decisions, the only time analytically he was too aggressive was the 2 point conversion from the 7. The 4th down not had both decisions as a slight go for it. A 52/48 decision.

I like the aggressive coaching too. Yes, it is hard to pick and choose. That is why I don't get Dan Campbell's paycheck. But he needs to improve at that part of his craft, and pick and choose better. That is my opinion. I know. Crazy.

Do you seriously think if they took the points over the season that they would have scored more points?

Yeah, we're not going to agree on this. I don't think today's 4th down failures were any harder that the 4th down TDs they had in the playoff wins. The only difference is the outcome.

I don't care about season points. I am only concerened about instances that lead to won games. Some of those 4th down TDs I agreed with attempting. Some attempts I did not agree with. In the game tonight, I did not agree with his calls to waive points for a TD try. And those are honest opinions I have / had - not the benefit of hindsight. I just think Campbell needs to improve. He probably thinks the same of some players.

Peace, man. I'll have to think about re-upping on the power rankings.

You referenced a post you had saying they left too many points on the season. So only won games count in if an individual 4th down success counts in that game?

Kyle Shanahan - “we were only down 17 in the second half.”

I disagreed with a few of Cambell's calls especially ones concerning points. I would have kicked a few FG's but you live by the sword you die by the sword. This hurt more because we had it. It was there for the taking. Numerous other things went into the loss like Reynolds dropping passes including a key 4th down play. That was huge. Probably the play of the game.
                      GO LIONS "24" !!

At the end of the day I'd like to know what was he going to gain in both cases of going for it?
This wasn't turning down points to get points - they were too far out to do that and didn't take a shot with the 4th down play anyway.
This isn't an issue if he's doing it from the 40, it's an issue when you are already in scoring range and come up nuts twice.

That is two turnovers, and you can't turn the ball over like that and expect to win at this level of the playoffs.

The only real bonehead move was the run at the goal line at the end. Just can’t do that in that situation.

No issues with them going for the first 4th down. I’m never a fan of empty backfield’s in those situations. Especially since Goff is not a threat as a scrambler. But the play was there.

On the 4th and 3, I would have kicked. Tie it up, and if the 49ers go down and score then at least it’s still a one score game and you have a chance to win. But since they hadn’t been able to stop them all 2nd half, the best way to win the game may have been to just keep the ball and eat up clock while getting a TD. I can see the logic there, even if I wouldn’t have done it.

Yet the fumble and the drops were the real killers. And when there were a couple of big plays to be made, Goff just missed. Those are the margins at this level.

                            From the Athletic:

                            • For the Lions, the bravado that brought them here also helped sink them. Dan Campbell doesn’t regret any of his failed fourth-down calls, but boy, those have to sting. The only one I can quibble with is his aggression with seven minutes to go, down three in field goal range. The fourth-down pass fell to the ground, and so did one of the best seasons in franchise history. Woof, woof, woof.
