I think if I had a criticism of Campbell's philosophy, it was less the decision to go for it on 4th down as much as he did, and more that there were quite a few times where it felt like either he or Johnson or both decided they were going to go for it on 4th down... on 1st down. And it either meant that what happened between those plays didn't matter, or they were running plays like they were specifically setting up that 4th down play.
There was more than once this season where they ran a play on 3rd down that left me scratching my head wondering "Why are you doing it this way? Why are you intentionally putting this team in a ride or die situation like this?" That second fourth down series was one of those times. I kinda felt like it wasn't a matter of if that was going to cost them, but when, and I guess that "when" was the NFC Championship Game.

"...when Hibernian won the Scottish Cup final and that celebration, Sunshine on Leith? I don’t think there’s a better football celebration ever in the game.”

Agreed, the most specific point to this is on 3rd and 3 they ran up the gut with St. Brown. St. Brown lines up in the backfield a lot but never with that specific play that I remember.
Usually the Lions use more deception when St Brown runs it...I dont remember them having him as the only back in the backfield and having him run it either.....I guess Ben thought he could catch the 49ers off guard there but they were ready, and the end brought down St Brown easily....Another key play late in the game was when the new TE caught his first pass and stepped out of bounds at the 2 instead of being able to stay in bounds and score.....2 plays later the Lions had to burn a timeout when they tried a running play and it failed.
Generally when ASR is in that formation and gets the handoff, it's to the edge. The concept of that is to freak out the defense to look for the wheel route.
What really grinds my gears is this sequence. Montgomery was churning out yards in the power sets. And they get down to the 37 and it's four straight shotgun passes. I don't know if that's Ben Johnson or DC's call, but so frustrating. You want to be tough, physical and you've got a guy running downhill on this team all day and you throw 4 straight passes out of shotgun, not even using the play action that had been so damn effective.

and who knows...lets say he kicks the FG that ties the game...does the defense hold up and not allow points? We just dont know what happens if different decisions are made....It was a 48 yarder Badgely is no sure thing from 50 on and that is only 2 yards less.....I imagine the Lions find a more reliable kicker this next season...Even so, I dont think Dan C likes them very much lol
Dan seemed to like the FG at the end of the first half just fine. He didn’t step on their throat at the 3 yard line.
That's not what he told the reporter at halftime, he wanted to go for it but he thought it was too far away. He was in agony that he felt like he had to kick the field goal.
