That's where the "team friendly" part of any deal may come into play, in how it is structured to maximize the cap space for the window the Lions are in. But yes, one thing he won't do is leave money on the table, nor should he.

This... was/is/never will be actually true. His deals were always structured to be extremely cap friendly, but at the end of the day when all the dollars were totaled, by around 2006 or so he was almost always within the Top 5 QBs in terms of actual hard cash in his hand. He was nigh always demanding "top dollar," and nigh always got it.

How they did it required a tremendous amount of trust, to be sure, because had the Patriots decided to screw him over, there wasn't much guaranteed money in the sort of contracts he signed, which allowed the Pats to consistently roll the big cap hits indefinitely to future years in ways that other teams weren't quite able to get away with.

I'm not saying Goff has to take a Brady level discount, but he also doesn't have to sign for top dollar. As a QB who needs good protection more than most, it's in his best interest to make sure that continues. That means that the team has to have the salary cap room to reward these guys to similarly fair contracts.

I guess I'm hoping that the negotiations are smooth and that he understands that whatever he leaves on the table will be spent on his teammates.

A lot of those veterans were either (A) at the end of their peak earning power anyway and/or (B) assuredly told that they weren't going to command terribly much more than what the Lions were offering. In that case, yes, a lot of players will choose consistency (and in the Lions case seeing the potential for a special team that could make a run for a championship).

Goff is going to be neither of those things. He's pretty much right at his peak earning power, and he'll know that he could very easily reach $50mil/year on the open market. The Lions might be able to sign him for a little less than that, but it's not going to be anything terribly significant.

Ben Solak from The Ringer did a breakdown of Jared Goff 2.0 -- compares him now (and in particular this past game) to when he was with the Rams.

Solak has not been a fan of Goff, so I think it kind of pains him to realize that he's good now. Once you can get past Ben's sophomoric reactions at the beginning, his football play breakdown is good. It's cool how the Bucs ran some defensive counters and deception and how Goff reacted by countering the counters.

A lot easier to take a bit of a haircut on your salary when your uber-famous supermodel wife is pulling in $50M+ a year.

When you talk about a hometown discount, it's not like Goff would sign up for $30M a year on average. It's more like taking $45M a year instead of holding out for $50M and agreeing to some of the funky contract structures Chemi is referring to.

Goff needs alot of support around him to be effective, especially the OL....We see what happens when things break down quickly, and he doesnt often thrive in that situation.....If he takes 50M per year, then he has to realize that someone like a Ragnow or Decker may have to be let go as a result later.
