Jared Goff’s next contract

  • I’m all for replacing Goff is someone could make a good suggestion. I just don’t think there’s a realistic replacement available that could match what he’s doing.

    Goff made a couple of clutch throws late in the game while under pressure. All QBs need protection and time to throw. Sure the super mobile QBs can run around and wait for receivers to get open but to me that’s not a sustainable offense. The Lions current setup works nicely.

      Decker could be cut prior to 6/1 for a 9.8 million cap savings (same savings trading him) and after 6/1 for 13.7 million in 2024. His 2025 is a void year. That was one of the reasons I thought the Lions (and I loved how the draft did play out) would be very interested in Skoronski because you could put him at G for this year. But when Decker is up you would have options of moving Sewell over to LT and you might have your RT in Skoronski there.

      I think getting a legit starting T in the draft this year would make a TON of sense.
      2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR

        • Yeah... I'm gonna have to see what FTN considers "good protection." Because if Goff is only getting "good protection" on 4% of his dropbacks, 3/4ths of the league is in negative number territory.

          That sounds like either A) a completely made up number, or B) the standard being used is so absurdly high few people or groups actually make the grade.

          • I’d have to agree with you. He’s not getting good protection but it can’t be that skewed of a number

                  • These last few weeks have definitely revealed Goff's warts. I still think of him as a solid top-10 QB. That still means that he deserves a contract in the top-5 because over the course of the contract it will end up as top-10 average as the salary cap rises and other QB contracts get signed for more money.

                    It does mean that we need to keep investing in the OL, but that's not a bad thing.

                    • Goff can't be paid premium money. Why? Paying an elite OL is even more important due to Goff's lack of mobility and imagination to make plays when stuff breaks down. His "lack of pressure vs. under pressure" splits are among the widest in the NFL.

                      You need a $80 million OL to protect an immobile QB, who will then, because stats, will demand $50 million. Over half the salary cap on say 7 guys.

                      Here's the current cap numbers from Over The Cap (rounded to the nearest $100k).

                      Goff = $31.0

                      -------------

                      Decker = $19.3

                      Ragnow = $16.5

                      Sewell = $6.5 (still on rookie contract, gonna get paid)

                      JJ = $3.3 (still on rookie contract gonna get paid, or walk)

                      Glasgow = $2.7 (Cheap vet deal, 1 year, will want to get paid)

                      ---------------------

                      Total starting OL = $45.1

                      HV= IR= (say a high quality reserve or starter) = $5.0

                      --------------------

                      Total OL Plus 1 reserve = $50.1

                      --------------------

                      Total OL plus Goff = $81.1

                      That's with 2 guys on rookie deals, plus Glasgow on a cheap deal, plus Goff, who will all want a big raise.

                      • Interesting situation.

                        Goff has been playing very good, but his lack of mobility in the pocket will be an issue going forward.

                        I would sign Goff to a one year deal, tops.

                        • Once.they extend Goff, his cap hit will be smaller for at least 2024.

                          • Yeah, we've got a top-3 offense for a 10-4 team and a team that should be on the short list of Superbowl favorites for the next couple years.

                            Goff will be getting a top-5 contract. The only question is whether the Lions can use the valid points dsred makes to keep it closer to 5th best instead of 1st -- whether Goff is willing to make a deal to help ensure that he has the OL he needs to be successful. If we can get him even lower than top-5, Holmes will have really earned his money.

                              Goff will definitely get his money but this is where Holmes will need to continue to upgrade the OL to keep him protected. Whether that’s spending more first round picks on OL / reworking deals he’s getting his. The OL is the major cog in the offense’s Ecco system of passing attack and a bad ass running game.

                              They’ll need to make those hard decisions to keep things running on a high level.

                                For comparison of cap numbers, Tunsil is at $25mm, Trent Williams is at $23mm, and Bakhtiari is at $23mm. Someone will offer Sewell $25mm.
