It's guys like Goff that really make me wish "game manager" wasn't co-opted by idiots who use it as a pejorative, because it beautifully describes what he does. He routinely and reliably gets the ball to his playmakers and rarely makes mistakes. If that doesn't sound impressive, it's because you don't understand how rare that ability actually is.

No, he's not going to throw a frozen rope 40 yards downfield as he's being tackled. He's not going to break the pocket and convert a 3rd and 15 with his legs. He's not going to thread a pass through three defenders in the middle of the field.

Because he's not going to be in those situations terribly often because he made the right choices on earlier plays. For defenses, he can be one of the most frustrating QBs to go up against because by all conventional knowledge, you should be eating him alive. You just rarely ever get the chance because he's not making the mistakes or forcing the plays that allow you to pin your ears back.

    • The first time I heard the term game manager was back in the 80s with Marty ball. The quartebacks job was to hand the ball off 35 times, make a few passes and don't turn the ball over. Thos teams would rely on the defense and the field goals and would win a lot of games 15-10. The term carries a negative connotation, nobody wants to win a lot of games that way. By that definition nobody wants a game manager.

Goff is not really a game manager by that definition. If you have a team that has scored over 20 points 14 games in a row. You're doing more than game managing. People take for granted some of these throws he is making. He had a great game today, but nothing jumps out. He has made Raymond and Reynolds.

          Agreed.

Every week he plays like a boss and leads this team. Hopefully they do it soon because if he does win the division and if by some Lions miracle we finally win a playoff game… that number will go up and up

              • The 2009/2010 Jets were #1 in defense and #1 in rushing. Yet didn't make it past the conference championship due to QB play. We cannot let Goff walk.

                • I’ve turned my opinion around on this guy. I think part of me just craved the fireworks and cannon arm after Stafford and cos he’s not flashy, he annoyed me. I also felt like we were getting someone else’s cast offs and we were getting him for a reason.

He just plays within himself, within the offense, makes some nice throws and exudes a kind of calm especially in these big road games (and he has won an NFCCG in NOLA.)

                  • I think the worry about the big splash plays is because we see every game and we have the ultimate big splash play quarterback in Stafford. Right now, Goff is tied for third in the league in yards per attempt with Josh Allen with 8.0 YPA. Only Tua (9.7) and Purdy (9.3) are ahead of him and I think that is more scheme than anything.

The point is defenses are in a cycle where they are taking away the long pass. The upgrade at quarterback where they are hitting these long passes more than Goff is more a platonic ideal than an actual real quarterback.

                    • Yep, lots of deep shell Cover 2. But he will take what the defense gives and can march up and down the field when he needs to. He’s good on third down too.

I don’t love the wobblers but I guess they never stopped Peyton Manning.

He is consistent and is PFF’s (like or hate them) top rated QB in the league this year.

                      • Quarterbacks who can carve up the area between the hashes and don't rely on the deep shots and targets outside the numbers survive the longest of any quarterbacks. It's why Russell Wilson looks washed up and Tom Brady won his last 4 Super Bowls at an advanced age.

                          • The deep ball chunk play is kinda like the 3-point shot in basketball. Unless you're really good at the intermediate stuff, the odds of something good happening taking shots over 25 yards (completion, blown coverage, penalty) outweighs a pass from 10-15.

Fortunately, Goff is really good at that intermediate stuff, possibly better than anyone currently playing. It's a skill that is not terribly common, and increasingly harder to find as the trend for the position is increasingly turning towards big arms with active legs. Everyone in the league is trying to find Patrick Mahomes now, always looking for the deep ball and scrambling or checking down for moderate gains if the deep shot isn't there.

                            • He just cuts you up quite surgically, but the chains keep moving and the scoreboard does too.

How much of that is Goff and/or Ben Johnson is up for debate. Hopefully it’s both. But I know good quarterback play when I see it and he has been playing well for some time now.

The Bears have never had a Jared Goff in their whole history.

                              Keep it going 16.

Right now its definitely both. I think when the Lions were struggling initially Goff and the calling weren't great. Ben Johnson's offense has unlocked such a stronger player in Goff. When Johnson leaves we'll just have to replace him with quality and keep rolling.. or cooking for those of you that like that saying.
