Nick, I think you misunderstood me. I was only pointing out why it was taken that way. Sorry if it seemed otherwise. I was really just trying to help.

Good point. My Rams are shooting up the power poll.

I think we should all argue over simple misunderstandings more often. With massively disproportionate rage.

Also, regardless of anyone talking about an extension its still going to be results dependent. If they win a playoff game then it's time to start talking. If they don't you sit on it another year with him under contract and franchise tag in hand.

The Cousins one is an understandable comparison to make in terms of what can happen if you try the replacement route. But there's also a second side to that story. They went 4-12 and then 9-7 with him and lost in the WC round. Then two more losing seasons. This is the area in which Nick's argument fits. If you aren't winning then gobbling up more of your cap to your Quarterback isn't likely going to change that. It's possible they could have been in a better place if they'd kept him. They could also still be hovering around .500 each year.

It comes down to playoff wins. If he wins pay him. If he doesn't then milk the tag and offer him a short term extension while he lacks leverage.

It certainly all depends upon him continuing to perform well. Having the franchise tag to fall back on is nice and all, but I don't think that is what they will do if they plan to keep him. You either need to re-sign him or make other plans. Quarterbacks don't get cheaper with time, only if they play poorly.

I do wonder if Goff would look to give them a bit of a hometown discount like Mahomes did for the Chiefs. He's loves this coaching staff and Holmes and how much they believe in him.

He’s playing well enough to offer a new contract and I was down on the guy.

My one concern is what happens when Ben Johnson goes.

This whole time you've been a Pecker fan? What else are you not telling us? Do you hang your toilet paper on the roll the wrong way also?

I bet he just leaves it empty...., with a roll on the counter just out of reach....

Tom Brady intentionally took contracts that were not the maximum he could have extracted. Said the discount was for bringing in better players. Goff could take less and have more go to Johnson just to keep his OC.

It is hard to think that Goff is worth $ 50 M/year.

                    • All this talk of power rankings. Why are the Cowboys consistently so high when they've played nobody? Giants, Jets, Cardinals, Patriots. A bunch of sucks. All of them are bottom half. Meanwhile we've played KC and Seattle. The worst teams we played were 2-0 and 2-1.

This argument relies heavily on the quarterback as messiah. That the quarterback is alone responsible for the record. Washington let go of Cousins and has had a parade of shitty quarterbacks since.

People were arguing the same thing with Stafford, his contract was too big and it hindered the Lions. His contract was a source of bellyaching for years and it was ridiculous.

When you have a quarterback, you need to keep the quarterback. Leave the salary cap.machinations to the pros. The good quarterbacks who are on average teams aren't the problem, it's the front office's inability to draft players and find bargains in free agency that's the problem.

People might not think Goff is worth $50 million a year, but that's because they are afraid of big numbers. Thats where the contracts are at.

                        • The Redskins since they let Cousins walk:
Traded for Alex Smith: a third round pick and Kendall Fuller. They also gave. Smith 71 million guaranteed on a 4 year extension
Traded for Case Keenum: just a pick swap. No damage other than you started Case Keenum for 16 games
Traded for Carson Wentz: 2022 second-round pick and a 2022 seventh-round pick to the Commanders for Washington's 2022 second-round pick, 2022 third-round pick and a conditional 2023 third-round pick. They took on 28 million dollars for Wentz that year
Taylor Heineke: signed him as a free agent, but he was cheap but ultimately wasn't the answer
Drafted Sam Howell in the 5th round of 2022. Jury is out on him.

Clearly they failed in replacing Cousins.

                          • You're misunderstanding what I'm saying and I'm definitely not a QB messiah guy. That doesn't change the fact that players, especially QB's get paid for results. So you have a few ways you can handle it.

Pay him now at the going rate of a franchise QB which will probably be 45-50mil a year. I think it's highly unlikely he wouldn't bet on himself so he's not likely to settle for less.

Pay him after winning some playoff games at the same going rate of 45-50mil.

Or Pay him after they've failed to win a playoff game this year or next and probably get him cheaper.

I'm not arguing to ship him out and roll the dice on what's next. I'm arguing to pay him intelligently. To me extending him now is not that.

                              • If you extend him now, it's much easier to manipulate the contract to make it small for next season. You lose that ability if you don't extend him before the league year starts in March. It's why the rumors are that they want to work out a deal.
