And the reason they don't land is because Goff's stats (and the eyeball test) says there's not 20 (or 30 or 40) million more dollars in production than the guys you think you're clowning me with. But honestly...I don't think you've really watched either of these guys play. You don't like mayfield because his attitude and don't like Watson because he likey the rub-and-tug....it's got nothing to do with football. I don't think either is a world beater...but I don't think that either is that far behind Goff in terms of talent (Watson is better IMO).

The whole mantra of paying a guy that you admit is 3rd tier the highest salary ever....just because: 1) it's his turn to get a contract. 2) you're terrified that you'll never find anyone better (which is a pansy-ass pussy-wimp attitude IMO).

It doesn't make sense...the massive overpayment you guys are proposing will lead to problems being competitive down the road (and we're out of extra 1st rd picks...plus we're going to be picking later in the game from now on). While I completely understand the want/need for continuity...again at what cost?

All I'm saying is that this isn't a blank check...there is a level of cost that I think should be paid and a level of cost that I think is strategically a bad idea. Paying Goff 50+ million is a bad idea

And FTR...if there's any FO and coaching staff that is qualified to draft and develop a QB...it's this one. Maybe some of my perceived under-confidence in Goff is because I'm overconfident with regards to Holmes'/Campbell's abilities to take the right players and put them in good positions.

3rd tier? Tiers are for writers and fans who come up with this fake shit. Goff is putting up the wins and stats. You pay for that.

Is he worth 50 mil? Thats a stretch but he is worth his fair market as all QB salaries are going through the roof and he’s still under 30 years old.

I however wouldn’t sign him and just sit still. I’d develop Hooker (who’s only a few years younger than Goff) or if he’s not the real deal then I’d find someone else to sit and learn that is. If they have to spend the resources then do it.

The Lions are on the cusp of something great. This isn’t the time to blow it up and start all over with the most important position in football

I am guessing Goff will get an extension that basically makes it easy to part ways after 2 or 3 years.

Why would his agent do a deal that short? Goff's in his late 20's....this is his last chance for a huge contract and he (and his agent) knows it.

You guys are sitting here telling me we have to pay top dollar....because it's his turn and that's just the way it is....but you think his agent is going to bend over when it comes to length and guaranteed money?

            I didn't realize we were playing make-believe.

No, what I'm saying is that the CAP HIT for those years won't make cutting or trading him prohibitive. Goff is going to get paid. The Lions are the ones that are going to massage the cap.

I didn't call him 3rd tier...someone else did. I was just using the accepted terminology......I said 2nd tier.

I guess now I want to ask....what makes you guys think Goff is an elite (and apparently irreplaceable) QB worth more than 50m (probably over 7 years)?

Who said to pay him $50M+ per year?

I was told earlier in the thread that it's not actually about ability...the next guy up gets the most money ever. that's just the way it is.

And the needle on QB contracts is now well over 50m...Look at how the QB contracts line up....Russell Wilson is at 49m and Kyler Murry is at 46m. Because of those 2 contracts alone the agent will push for north of 50m. If the lions win a playoff game he's going to want more than Herbert (@53m)

right around 50m is gonna be the number

It's like fighting the Black Knight on this argument. He might end up with somewhere around 50 million per year, but it certainly won't be over 7 years and that's where quarterback pay is headed anyway. Don't be afraid of big numbers. Any quarterback worth anything gets paid big time on the open market. Nobody is arguing he is irreplaceable but you are 80-90 percent likely to replace him with someone objectively worse. It would be like when Washington identified a really good quarterback in Kirk Cousins and got cheap with him and eventually let him go. What have they replaced him with?

You were replying to my post where you said I admitted he was third tier. I admitted no such thing, do we need to throw the Progressive Red Flag?

I saw an interesting stat before the year started that Goff actually has one of the better abilities to escape the rush in the NFL. Think about what we saw between Goff & Love last game. Love may have better physical agility, but he doesn't have the awareness of Goff while looking to pass and it showed.

It helps explain why he's been remarkably durable over his career.

Here's how I'd break down the top QBs in the NFL
Top Tier: Mahomes, Allen & Burrow
2nd Tier: Herbert, Jackson, Lawrence, Stafford & Prescott
3rd Tier: Goff, Tagovailoa, Smith & Hurts

That 2nd & 3rd tier are really close and can mix and match. I am comfortable putting Goff at top 8.
throw the flag....not everything is about you Froot
