  • As Dan V pointed out upthread, that was Cosell at his absolute best, calling that fight. Boxing in its last heyday.

    • You got that right, CG. I was thinking on my way to work (and I have not clicked on the youtube thingy) it was Cosell chanting "Down goes Frasier! Down goes Frasier! Down goes Frasier!"
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.

              • Arkansas TE Garrett Uekman dies

                Associated Press

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas' football team was in mourning Sunday following the death of backup tight end Garrett Uekman.
The university said in a statement that Uekman was pronounced dead at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville on Sunday afternoon. The cause of death wasn't immediately known and police and university officials wouldn't comment until all of Uekman's family had been notified.
University police Lt. Matt Mills said he expected to have more information on Monday.
The 19-year-old Uekman redshirted last season for the Razorbacks but had seen limited action this season as a freshman.
David Estes, the football coach at Little Rock Catholic where Uekman played in high school, said he was told by Arkansas running backs coach Tim Horton that Uekman had been found by his roommate in his dorm room on campus. Estes said he watched Uekman play and was "beaming from ear to ear" Saturday night in Little Rock's War Memorial Stadium as the Razorbacks defeated Mississippi State 44-17.
"Garrett was any parent or coach's dream," Estes said. "He was one of those special kids and had a passion for everything. He loved Catholic High, loves UA and wanted to be a Razorback forever.
"He got to live that dream."
The No. 3 Razorbacks (10-1, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) play at No. 1 LSU on Friday.

                  • Mariners OF Greg Halman stabbed to death; brother arrested
Dutchman helped the Netherlands win 2007 European Baseball Championship

ROTTERDAM ? Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death in Rotterdam on Monday and his brother has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Halman, 24, was signed as a free agent by Seattle in 2004 and after a long spell in the minor leagues he was called up to the majors last year.

"A 24-year-old died this morning in a stabbing and we have arrested the 22-year-old brother of the victim," a Rotterdam police spokesman told Reuters.

NOS-TV said Halman's family had confirmed his death.

The Dutchman helped the Netherlands win the 2007 European Baseball Championship.

When not playing for the Mariners, Halman had helped boost baseball in Europe by holding coaching clinics with youngsters.

Halman hit .230 with two home runs and six RBIs in 35 games with the Mariners last season.

That announcement of Mr. Speed's death certainly cast a pall on the Swansea/Aston Villa matchup today. I'm shocked they didn't call off the game.
