Patriots fan favorite Tatupu dies
*Mark Pratt, Associated Press Writer ? 38 mins ago
BOSTON ? Mosi Tatupu, one of the most popular players in New England Patriots history known for his inspired special teams play, has died.
Tatupu died Tuesday at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, hospital spokeswoman Ashley O'Brien said. He was 54. The hospital could not disclose a cause of death.
The Plainville Fire Department responded to Tatupu's home on Tuesday and took him to the hospital, Lt. Richard Ball said.
"I know that I share a heavy heart today with Patriots fans everywhere who have learned of Mosi Tatupu's passing," team owner Robert Kraft said in a statement.
"He was a dominant special teams player and a punishing rusher who loved the Patriots as much as the fans did," he said.
Tatupu was chosen by the Patriots in the eighth round of the 1978 draft out of Southern California and played 13 of his 14 NFL seasons with the team, wrapping up his career with the Los Angeles Rams in 1991.
The bruising 227-pound fullback rushed for 2,415 yards and 18 touchdowns, including a career best 578 yards in 1983. He thrived on snowy and icy fields, running for 128 yards on a snow-covered field in a win over New Orleans that season.
While never a superstar, Tatupu was beloved by Patriots fans for his play on kickoff and punt teams and even had his own cheering section known as "Mosi's Mooses." He was selected to the 1986 Pro Bowl as a special teams player.
"As a teammate, he was one of the best," former Patriots quarterback Steve Grogan said. "He was one of those guys that made life fun whether it was in the locker room or on the practice fields. He had a smile that radiated."
Tatupu was selected to New England's 50th anniversary team last season.
After his retirement as a player, Tatupu was the head coach at King Philip Regional High School in Wrentham, where he coached his son Lofa, now a linebacker with the Seattle Seahawks.
He also served as an assistant at Curry College in Milton from 2002-2007, coaching running backs and special teams.
"Mosi was a vital part of the success of our program," said Vinnie Eruzione, athletic director at the Division III school. "There was no better guy."
Tatupu was born in Pago Pago, American Samoa, and was a high school football star in Hawaii. His Hawaii high school career rushing record of 3,367 yards stood for 17 years, according to the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame Web site.19.1119, NO LONGER WAITING

Corey Haim died Wednesday morning of an apparent drug overdose, according to Los Angeles police.
Eighties teen idol Corey Haim died Wednesday morning of an apparent drug overdose, according to Los Angeles police.
The Canadian-born actor, who starred in "The Lost Boys" but was probably best known for his roles with fellow actor Corey Feldman, was 38.
He was found unresponsive at his Oakwood apartment around 3:30 a.m.,according to KTLA-TV. His mother was at the apartment at the time of his death.
The actor, who has struggled with drug addiction, was pronounced dead at Providence St. Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank.
Police were called to the hospital just before 4 a.m. to investigate his death.
Police sources told CBS Haim's death appeared accidental. Haim has been in and out of rehab and starred in a reality show with Feldman in 2007 called "The Two Coreys."
He talked about his struggle with drugs - specificially prescription drugs.
"I started on the downers which were a hell of a lot better than the uppers because I was a nervous wreck. But one led to two, two led to four, four led to eight, until at the end it was about 85 a day - the doctors could not believe I was taking that much," he told a reporter in 2007.
"And that was just the Valium - I'm not talking about the other pills I went through."
Haim's official website was last updated on Jan. 18 and promotes his upcoming film, a thriller titled "American Sunset.""Low on the totem, till he showed 'em defiance, giant scrotum"

As someone with three bad disks in his neck can't say I agree with that gonz.......but the way they throw drugs at you sometimes is nuts.
I've got a good pain mgt guy.....and I work with him to keep my pain at a managable level while taking drugs that don't really impair me. Some drugs I won't touch with a 10 foot pole.....percocet makes me absolutely retarded for instance and I won't do oxycontin because of all the horror stories you hear.
I went to an appointment on day and got the guy's PA........who promptly want to talk about different options I might have, then preceeded to say that considering where I was at I should try methadone. I threw her out of her own office and told her to send my regular Dr. in.

A few years ago a friend of mine had some bizarre and inexplicable sort of chest pain. After consulting with several different docs to figure out what was wrong with her, she ended up on FOURTEEN different prescription meds, mostly pain drugs. She went from being a sweet, lively and energetic girl to a lump on the couch that did nothing but eat and watch tv all day. Thank goodness it wasn't illegal drugs."I ain't the type to bitch, I ain't the type to cry, I will sit at your red light and wait for your shit to go by."
