    • Henry Allingham. Not a "celebrity" per se, but the world's oldest man at 113 years old. He was the last surviving original member of the Royal Air Force. He attributed his remarkable longevity to "cigarettes, whisky and wild, wild women."

      Cheers.

          • Walter Conkrite had no equal. There were other anchors that were vying for ratings during the same time slot but his integrity and delivery elevated him above any other single broadcaster. Huntly and Brinkely did a good job of trying to equal, but it took two of them to do what Walter did signlehandedly.

He is one of the reasons as a youngster, I paid attention to National News.

Thanks for your work, Walter, RIP.
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.

There must be precious few left in the world born prior to 1900. It was so common (of course) as I was growing up. And, there are probably none that remember the turn of the century from the 1800s as all those that are left were too young.

                  • EDIT: WHY IS IT SO FREAKING HARD TO POST A FREAKING LINK NOWADAYS?????????

Well, here's [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_verified_oldest_people"]a list of the oldest remaining[/ame] (highlighted in green).

Gertrude Baines would have been five at the turn. She might remember.

EDIT AGAIN: WHY THERE'S A STUPID BOX WITH A RED X IN THIS LINK, I HAVE NO CLUE, BUT THE ADVANCE OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY IS MAKING MY LIFE SOOOOO GREAT.

                    • I am surprised by the amount of French people on the list. At the time growing up France would still have been one of the worst countries in terms of hygiene.

Maybe they keep poorer records and their information is not accurate?

                        • I wouldn't doubt that. We went there to find the grave site of English relative that died in WWII. He wasn't where he was supposed to be, and we never found him.

As far as the French bad hygiene, I think it's been proven that strong antibodies can be built up by being exposed to germs. Perhaps that has something to do with their apparent longevity.

                          • Yes, and on the contrary, the people who hypersanitize tend to always get sick. You gotta give your body a chance to build up an immune system.

                            • I got swollen glands for a number of years anytime I was out in a cold rain with my head exposed. I'd go to the doctor, get some penicilin, and be fine in about 7-10 days. Then one year I didn't go to the doctor. I eventually got better, and I never got swollen glands again.
