Lets look at that 4th and 5 play....These are the options...

Go for it....but alot of injured key players....Odds of getting it without them or with them injured?

FG.....54 yarder would be a career long for Siebert, and he missed a closer one earlier..also even if he makes it, it would only give them a 6 point lead with plenty of time left

Punt....How often does Fox punt from the 37?...I am guessing they practice those but I could easily see him kicking it in the end zone and then you only gained 17 yards....Even if executed perfectly Minn was going against a bad defense only needing a FG to tie.

None of the options were high chance of success....It just looked like the classic "how are the Lions going to lose this one" end of the game.

The timeout is much worse. Why run up the guy on a run blitz to waste their timeouts if you are going to give them a timeout after a long pass. His logic makes no sense on this.

I doubt it. A punt to coffin corner would've changed the calculus considerably. At that point, they're likely looking for a field goal to take it to overtime and it's possible their kicker would've missed as earlier in the game.

I'm going for it each and every time. One play to kill the game dead.

Sure, but let’s face it; the only way a Lions Defense keeps the opposing team out of the endzone in the last 2 minutes nursing a lead under 7 points…is to hope you can get them to settle for a tying FG instead forcing them to score a TD

If you choose to punt there you take a delay to back up first. It's not gonna be from the 37.

The opposing team can decline the penalty.

Well, let's say they punt and it's a touchback, that's still about a twenty-five yard swing in field position from what happened. Maybe that doesn't matter, but it's still an objectively better decision than hoping Seibert can hit from 54.

Can they decline a delay of game?

I'm not sure on that. There are some that can't be declined. Is this one?

The Lions declined the delay of game against the Broncos last year.

From what I just read, they can only decline a second successive delay to prevent an infinite loop.

                      Delay is a pre-snap penalty

                      Edit:

Looks as if the penalty must be accepted, but not the walk off of the yards.

What a convoluted way of saying you can fucking decine it, Ha!

Declining the delay of game is not super common but it does happen on occasion. Usually a couple of coaches dicking around with each other. There just really isn't a whole lot of advantage in doing so.

Our punter is a probowler. OR you have Goff line up in the shot gun and if someone is open, he hits them. OR he pooches it. Goff has punted in college before. It has been awhile, but I have more faith in either of those situations then Seibert hitting a 54 footer. I really hope Dan isn't one of those arrogant types that just can't learn from his mistakes.

He has to stop taking timeouts when his opponent has the ball at the end of a half. If they're close to the goal? Ok. It's obvious that they're going to score something. But taking then when they aren't even in scoring position? Not good.
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

                            Shit, I think I could hit a 54-footer.

Knowing our luck, the pooch would've hit the LOS and bounced back to our 25 yard line.

The pooch punt has gone out of favor in recent years. As has the corner kick. I"m sure there's some sort of statistic that shows hitting it high with the right kind of spin is more effective.
