  • Good size, good RAS score, not much production. Can he help stop the run?

    • Produced in college at least - 8+ sacks each of his final two years.

        • If someone gets as many snaps as Hutch at that position, there will be pressures and some sacks. It's kind of like when a basketball team loses a 20 point scorer, whoever replaces that player they will do some stuff but you aren't getting the 90+ PFF grade that Hutch gets.

The thing about the Lions is Campbell and Holmes have built a tough team that can win slugfests or shootouts. But they play indoors and 14 or their 17 games are indoors. Those games are going to tend to be more high scoring. Even with Hutch they could get leaky on pass defense but that is because teams were abandoning the run and throwing quickly. The key is seeing if the QB can hold into the ball longer.

          • The secondary isn't yet a finished product either. They'll continue to get better and better and will be one of the strongest, if not the strongest, part of the defense by year's end. Still a long way to go. They won't panic into an Edge move, nor should they.

            • The good thing is we will see right away with the Vikings, under Campbell/Glenn the Lions are 4-2 and in all 4 wins the Vikes have shredded the secondary with at least 350 yards passing in each of the 4 wins (2 games from Cousins and Mullens). All 4 wins saw the Lions playing with a lead for the majority of the game if not the whole game. Of course win 1 was the famous first win of the Campbell era. They were leading all the way until Captain Kirk connected with Jefferson with under 2 minutes to take a 4 point lead. That's when Goff led them down the field for a last play TD to Saint.

              • The Vikings defense is legit. But from what I believe it’s blitz heavy. If Lions can run the ball that will take care of that

                • More interested in the Viking offense against a Hutchless Lion defense.

Similar to Tampa Bays approach then?

                    • Alim McNeil just inked a 4 year, 97 million dollar contract. 55 of it guaranteed.

PFF has Alim ranked 8th out of 191 d-linemen this season.
                      AAL: KhaDarel Hodges

                      • The Lions continue to take care of their own, and before it is strictly necessary to do so. There are so many advantages to that, even if it might nibble at the cap space in the short term.

This is where you find "hometown discounts;" when you come to players, and extend them earlier than you absolutely have to, that is where you can find overall savings. McNeil would have cost a heck of a lot more, both in terms of total dollars, and even year-to-year, had the Lions waited until the last minute like a lot of teams do.

But with this approach you don't win the press conference like Jerrah.

It’ll be interesting to see what they do with Onwuzurike. Do they try to work out an extension or let him hit the open market and possibly get into a bidding war. He hasn’t really proven anything yet, but if he makes it through the whole season I could see him being an attractive target for some teams
