James Mitchell has that valuable 2 year, dirt cheap, rookie contract remaining. I’m not that surprised Mitchell won TE3, but he was right there on the bubble. Lions showing patience with him. It seemed like a total toss up between Mitchell and Zylstra.

Could be the case of not wanting to guarantee Zylstra's contract if he was on the roster first day of the season. They might wait till week 2 and do a swap if he is still available.

I as well am disappointed with DPJ. Having signed him mid-season last year with no experience in Ben Johnson's offense, hard to expect much out of him for 2023, but I figured with a full offseason and training camp he would become an impact receiver. Will miss Reynolds....

Detroit Lions' 53-man roster only has 52 players after cutdown announcement

Allen Park — The Detroit Lions established the team’s initial roster for the 2024 season Tuesday afternoon, but with one spot still open. We’re posting the roster and full list of cuts immediately and will have an analysis piece on the moves later today.

As a reminder, players placed on injured reserve or kept on the non-football or physically unable to perform lists are eligible to return after sitting out four games. Because of the team’s early-season bye, that means those players can debut for the Lions' Week 6 contest in Dallas.

For players who were cut and have four or more accrued seasons, they are free to sign with another team immediately. Players with fewer than four accrued seasons will be placed on waivers. The deadline for teams to claim someone waived Tuesday is noon the next day.

Teams can begin establishing their 16-man practice squads Wednesday afternoon.

Cominsky and Iffy on the list, so I'm guessing there's going to be some shuffling with those two at least. Peko, Agude & Ukwu are surprises, but they might be part of that shuffling.

Strickland is the biggest surprise on the roster I can see. Selected at safety over CJ Moore, among others. I would think he is less likely to be claimed than some others who were released and they might want to come back, but what do I know.

Three WR options who could interest the Lions


The Lions need wide receivers, this much is clear. And while we're still early in the cut cycle, a few notable names appear to be hitting the market (either through their pending release or via trade). Here's a sampling of some of the receivers that reportedly will be available to the Lions and other teams:

Tim Patrick, Denver Broncos - Patrick is expected to be traded or released at 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to 9News in Denver. At 30 years old, he's far removed from his best days as an NFL player. He's missed most of the past two seasons with ACL and Achilles injuries and doesn't add much on special teams, but he does offer size (6-4, 212 pounds) and downfield playmaking ability, and Lions general manager Brad Holmes did deal for a Denver receiver (Trinity Benson) at the cut deadline a few years ago.
Tyrell Shavers, Buffalo Bills - Some out of Buffalo seem caught off guard by Shavers' release. Shavers spent his rookie season on Buffalo's practice squad and was fighting for the No. 6 receiver spot with the Bills. He had three stops in college (including three years at Alabama) and has limited NFL tape, but he is 6 feet 4 and he was known for his special teams play coming out of school, where he blocked three punts at San Diego State and excelled as a gunner.

John Metchie, Houston Texans - A 2022 second-round pick and former teammate of current Lions receiver Jameson Williams, Metchie is part of a logjam of receivers in Houston. It's unclear how willing the Texans are to deal Metchie, though Bleacher Report said teams have reached out to inquire about his availability. Metchie wouldn't add much from a size standpoint to the Lions roster, but he'd have more upside than most available receivers. If he's dealing with the Texans, Holmes might be more tempted to add a veteran receiver he knows well from their time together with the Los Angeles Rams, Robert Woods.

They didn't put Reader on the dl so it looks as if they are expecting him to play sooner than later. From what I've read I would guess game two. That will beef up the middle.

Reader is their only NT and true run stuffer. McNeil and Levi can fill that role but it’s not what they are asked to do usually. Mingo is undersized.

Cominsky is not playing anytime soon, so there is some roster gymnastics they will perform. The NFL changed some of the injury designation rules so Lions likely looking to leverage those.
