  • I believe that a lot of national experts are emotionally committed to the idea that the Detroit Lions have to be a permanently bad franchise. If the Lions are genuinely good, that screws with their world view.

I don't know if it screws over their world view or not, but it sure has me confused. ;)

        • I think it's less about the Lions and more about Goff. Once people get anchored to a negative opinion about a player, it's very hard to get them off that opinion. Its either they have to give credit to Ben Johnson or the surrounding players. They never think that maybe Goff has something to do with the surrounding players. A guy like St. Brown is great, but if he has a quarterback like Justin Fields, is he still great?

They will say Goff is a system quarterback without mentioning that he helped build the system with Johnson and Campbell.

The old NFL Films episode where they detailed Pittsburgh's turnaround might be the best episode.

            • blame Cleveland ownership/management for the stupidity of the Deshawn Watson contract.

              • Thing is, the only thing that is "stupid" about Watson's contract is that it's all guaranteed money. The actual price tag is fairly benign at this point.

                • Deshaun Watson went to three Pro Bowls, even with the baggage he had leverage. Teams are going to spend on quarterbacks. At any one time there are maybe 12-15 teams that are secure with the quarterback and the rest are hoping their young guy turns out or they are looking. They are going to spend. It is simple supply and demand.

Watson got the guarantee and the big money because he told Cleveland he wasn't going there. They gave him the equivalent of a Monty Williams offer to reconsider. When teams don't have quarterbacks they do desperate things.

What you don't do is franchise tag your QB three straight years to save 10-20 million. That's batshit crazy.

                    • Another issue is when you tag someone, there is no manipulating the cap number. If you have to tag the guy at 55 million, that's the cap number

                        • Another thing about that article is he is saying Goff's contract may hamstring them. People who argue against this contract act like they won't restructure the contract in three years when his cap hit doubles. They will be converting a large part of the salary to signing bonuses or adding void years. And he is using the OTC projections, this have proven to be conservative the last two seasons and will continue to be conservative because the league keeps on selling new packages.

I can't remember if I posted it here, but there was a stat that showed that Goff was the best QB in the NFL with a clean pocket. He is also among the best against the blitz. He was below average, but not terrible against pressure.

The stat showed that Goff had the biggest disparity between what he did with a clean pocket vs under pressure -- but that was mostly because he was so good in a clean pocket.

Critics like to truthfully say that most NFL QBs would look good behind the Lions OL. It's true, but the statistics show that all of them would be a downgrade from what Goff brings in those circumstances. Basically, if you have a great OL, then Goff might be the QB that you would most want to run your offense.
