A champion, plays big and baked goods; what former coaches are saying about new Lions

    Justin Rogers
    The Detroit News

Orlando, Fla. — NFL coaches are more concerned about what is — or what can be — than what was. Regardless, the league meetings offer an opportunity to get some early insight into players who have left programs for new opportunities.

On Monday morning, the AFC's coaches met with media at the event being held at a shared JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton property in Orlando, where Las Vegas' Antonio Pierce, Baltimore's John Harbaugh and Cincinnati's Zac Taylor were each asked what the Lions were getting in their former players who signed with Detroit as free agents earlier this month.

Pierce, a longtime NFL linebacker, who translated an interim opportunity with the Raiders into a full-time head-coaching job this offseason, had to hold back a smile when asked about cornerback Amik Robertson.

"A ball hawk," Robertson said. "A guy that's very — you know, you hate to say it — but he's kind of got a little man's complex. He plays bigger than what he is. You look at him, 5-8, 5-9 guy, but extremely talented, gifted competitor. Sad to see him go, but very proud of him."

Pierce said Robertson battled daily on the practice field and was always ready to answer the bell when his number was called, particularly when he moved into the starting lineup, beginning in Week 4 last season.

"When he got the opportunity this year, he made the most of it," Pierce said.

Following Detroit's recent decision to release 2023 starter Cam Sutton, Robertson is expected to compete with Emmanuel Moseley for one of the team's starting jobs. Moseley played just two snaps for the Lions last season and has missed most of the past two years due to ACL tears in each knee.

Sticking on the defensive side, Taylor raved about defensive tackle DJ Reader's leadership and championship mentality.

"He was a great leader for us, tremendous player, everything that we wanted our players to be about and our leaders to be about," Taylor said. "(He) was consistent with his effort and performance, and has made some critical plays for us in some critical games that we’ll always remember. Wish D.J. the best of luck and I know (new Lions defensive line coach) Terrell Williams will take good care of him."

Taylor and Williams overlapped in Miami, where both worked under Lions coach Dan Campbell when he served as the franchise's interim head coach in 2015.

Even though Reader didn't start his NFL career in Cincinnati, Taylor said the defender's leadership style was cultivated during his college days at Clemson.

"He’s just a champion," Taylor said. "He’s won championships at Clemson. Like I said, (he) was part of some big moments here at Cincinnati for us. I know that’s why Detroit’s bringing him in."

Reader hasn't won a Super Bowl, falling just short in Cincinnati. He acknowledged at his introductory press conference with the Lions earlier this month that the loss to the Los Angeles Rams still fuels him.

"I was telling them upstairs, these guys got that same taste that I got," Reader said. "I got to a Super Bowl and lost. These guys got to the NFC Championship and lost. So everybody in this building has that same goal to go get that taste out of their mouth. I’m so ecstatic about that part. I could run through a wall right now, because you don’t have (a lot of) time to right those wrongs. This is an opportunity, and I don’t think we’re going to take it lightly as a team to go out there and do our thing."

From Harbaugh, the Lions snatched away guard Kevin Zeitler, a 12-year veteran who received Pro Bowl recognition last season for the first time in his career. In addition to what the Ravens coach expects Zeitler to bring to the Lions on the field, he shared what he'll — or more accurately, his wife Sara — will contribute behind the scenes.

"Kevin Zeiter, all ball, every single day," Harbaugh said. "Ball and baking. I mean, his wife bakes the best stuff. Everybody in Detroit and that building is going to get the best baked goods they've ever had in their life. But Kevin's an excellent football player. He's got a lot left in the tank. Very tough, physical guy. In a lot of ways, he was the personality of our team. He kind of established us that way."

Grit and cookies? Not a bad deal, as long as they're not gritty cookies.

Detroit Lions' Rod Wood to NFL exec: 'I asked if he prayed for better officiating'

          Detroit Free Press

ORLANDO — Detroit Lions president Rod Wood was so mad after his team's controversial loss to the Dallas Cowboys in December that he asked NFL executive Troy Vincent if he "prayed for better officiating."

Wood made that admission on Day 1 of the NFL's annual meeting Monday, when he explained the process he went through of contacting the league to complain about a call that eventually cost the Lions a chance to host the NFC championship game.

"In terms of the process, you’re really not allowed to talk to the league until 9 a.m. the day following the game," Wood said. "So I sent a text to (NFL executive vice president of football operations) Troy Vincent and said I’ll be calling you at 9 a.m., you know what the topic is. And I called him at 9 a.m. He was in church, so he called me back at 10, and I asked if he prayed for better officiating. Which he said he always does."

Taylor Decker catches a 2-point coversion eventually overturned 12-30-2023.jpg

The Lions lost a Week 17 game to the Dallas Cowboys, 20-19, after officials nullified their go-ahead 2-point conversion with 23 seconds to play on an illegal touching penalty.

Left tackle Taylor Decker caught the go-ahead pass, but referee Brad Allen incorrectly announced sixth lineman Dan Skipper as the eligible receiver on the play after Skipper ran in from the sideline, in Allen's direction, while making a hand gesture near his body.

Skipper said he was signaling in the Lions' personnel package. Linemen often swipe down on their jerseys as part of the reporting process as eligible.

The Lions failed on two subsequent 2-point tries, then failed to recover the ensuing onside kick.

They finished the regular season 12-5, in a three-way tie for the NFC's best record, but lost the tiebreaker to the San Francisco 49ers and were the 2-seed in the playoffs. The top-seeded 49ers beat the Lions in the NFC championship game at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

"There was a legitimate difference of opinion as to who said what and who heard what," Wood said. "And so the resolution is really that you log your complaint and they promise to do better. There’s really nothing you can do to change it, but I didn’t want Dan (Campbell) or anybody else to have to worry about it. They got another game to get ready for. It would have been nice to have had a chance to see if we could win that game. The 2-point play didn’t win the game. They still had (23) seconds. They had a timeout, they could have kicked a field goal, but it would have been nice to see if we could have stopped them because we might have been playing San Francisco in Detroit for the chance to go to the Super Bowl."

Wood said the Lions didn't feel the need to propose any rule changes relating to the reporting of eligible receivers at this week's meetings " 'cause we think we did it correctly."

The Lions made four proposals at this week's meetings, including a change to the challenge system that was approved Monday. Last year, the team proposed a new third quarterback rule that also passed.

"I don’t know that there’s anything that we could have done differently that would have caused the ref to recognize 68 (Decker's number) vs. 70 (Skipper's), so it wasn’t one that we talked about," Wood said. "There’s a few others that we talked about that we didn’t submit, but one passed this morning, we have a couple more that’ll be discussed (Tuesday). So it’s a different approach maybe than what we’ve done in the past, where we actually have people taking notes during the season of potential rule changes that we may want to bring up. And I think we’ve got a process now that’s yielded, at least last year we got the quarterback, this year we got the third challenge. All about improving the league and improving things from our perspective for everybody, not just the Lions."

Well it's all a matter of prospective. If Sutton pissed and angry immediately takes off for Detroit. No one down there may have seen him and have no idea where he went. Eventually a warrant is issued, someone get big brained and calls the Lions to inform them about the warrant. They tell him he needs to turn himself in and cut him as soon as he runs.

it does mean he was around and doing stuff much more recently then suggested. But it doesn't mean people where lying. I think people thought this was becoming some kind of FBI man hunt, where really it was a house check, a couple calls. No credit card checks, no check points at the airports. No national bulletins. Hell we probably wouldn't even know if it wasn't for people constantly scouring the net for news.

I asked this a few times and never got a response. Could never afford it on my own and at this point plays to stay are going to be extremely high.
