  • Supposedly, WR is really strong in day 2 prospects in this year's draft. Holmes made a comment at the combine about the bigger X receivers in this draft. I've also seen recent mocks with either Coleman or McConkey at 29. I'd prefer the IOLs who can also play either OT or C, but certainly wouldn't hate it. I mean, at the end of the day, I trust Holmes.

Pearsall or Corley in the 2nd and McCaffrey or Cowing in the 4th (if we can get one) are my current favs. All contested catch well, block and generate YAC.

Can't be. DWT is too much of a international superspy/astronaut/special agent to ever be caught dead in something cheap like a Ford SUV.

Maybe he got it free with all his Ford stock dividends

            • The All-22 guy did film breakdown of both Amik Robertson and DJ Reader. He loves both guys and think Holmes is crushing it. What you can see from the film is how both guys are more athletic than a typical NFL player. The DJ Reader film is kinda crazy how he just destroys any intention by the offense of running the ball -- wherever they run it.

edit: and he does it against the Chiefs, Ravens & Titans -- teams that usually get their way running the ball.

I like listening to the guy for the most part, but he is a little dry and just a bit overboard on how positive he is with these two players. Still the game film is a good watch if you like that kind of thing:

That was pretty interesting how he called out that Davis is primarily a left outside CB and Amik is a right outside CB. I really like this signing.

                  • Right now the Lions have 34 million in cap space with 62 on the roster per OTC. OTC already figures the rookie pool into cap liabilities. You also want to have 10-15 million to play with going into the season, so they probably have 20 million in wiggle room if they like somebody on the market in the second and third wave of free agency.
The Detroit Lions restructured newly-traded-for cornerback Carlton Davis, lowering his cap hit significantly from $14.35 million.

                    • You have to wonder how much they would like to roll over for next year with possible Goff, Sun God and Sewell extensions.
2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR

                      • I think with Saint Brown and Goff, it's easier to do the extension now. It gives them more flexibility.

                        • What did the league tell us about what it thinks of Justin Fields? Should the Falcons feel good about the Kirk Cousins deal? Is Dak Prescott about to get paid? Why are the Lions and Bengals low-key winning the offseason? Plus, Eagles fan fiction and more.

                          5. The Detroit Lions are striking the right balance.

The best news for them came when offensive coordinator Ben Johnson decided he wanted to stick around in lieu of taking a head-coaching job. The Lions finished fifth in offensive DVOA last season, and they’re bringing almost everyone back. Among the 13 offensive players who logged at least 400 offensive snaps for the Lions last season, the only two who aren’t under contract for 2024 are guard Jonah Jackson (who signed with the Rams) and wide receiver Josh Reynolds (currently unsigned as a free agent). This group is positioned to put up a lot of points once again.

Defense is where the Lions decided they needed a talent upgrade, and I like what they’ve done on that side of the ball. Detroit acquired Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis III for a third-round pick (they also got a pair of sixth-rounders back). Davis has had some injury issues (he played a total of 25 games the past two seasons), but he is a feisty, experienced outside corner who is entering only his age-28 season. When he’s on the field, Davis will offer an obvious upgrade to the players Detroit had on the field last year. They also signed versatile corner Amik Robertson to a two-year, $9.25 million deal.

Up front, the Lions took a flier on former first-round pick defensive lineman Marcus Davenport. Last offseason, Davenport signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Vikings. He played in just four games because of injury. That’s obviously a risk once again, but the Lions are buying low, signing Davenport to a reported one-year, $6.5 million deal. If he can stay relatively healthy, that’s a nice deal even if he’s just an average starter.

And finally, the Lions added defensive tackle D.J. Reader on a two-year, $27.25 million deal with around $9 million guaranteed. Reader is an excellent run-stopping defensive tackle who fits what the Lions want to do. My only question here is resource allocation, considering the Lions already had the best run defense in the NFL last year.

The Lions are in a tricky spot. On one hand, it seems like they feel like they’re close, and they want to go for it. On the other, they have a young core, and they want to build something sustainable. General manager Brad Holmes has done a nice job of trying to balance both of those objectives. The bottom line is that the Lions were Super Bowl contenders last year, and on paper, they’ve gotten better this offseason.

                          • Article above pointed out how the Davenport signing is pretty good. He signed with Vikings last year for $13M and now we got him for $6.5M. I read some posts in other forums concerned about his culture fit, but Campbell & Glenn knew him already and, to me, he seemed pretty level headed in this interview with Dannie Rogers below:

                            • I guess that answers the question about our discussion over Carlton Davis's cap number.

I don't know that they necessarily need to roll over a ton of cap. They could just look at one year deals now to not put on extra spending in the future. So maybe they add a guy or two once guys start to settle for those.

Im def wondering what’s taking them so long with Goff. The longer they wait the worse it’s going to be. These salaries aren’t doing anything but going up.
