Shanahan took the points twice in the Superbowl.
And the same kicker set the record for most consecutive made extra points since they moved the line back. He went 60 for 60 before missing his last one of the season, which also cost them in the final regular season game loss (Granted a game they were playing backups).

Moody really had a good season for a rookie, but the kicks he did miss in several cases ended up being the difference in some losses.

      • Getting Sneed would be great, but I highly doubt they spend that big for a player. It doesn't seem in character for what they are doing and it would probably throw a wrench into their long term cap plans.

Finding kickers is hard. Even if you want to go out and get a good kicker, you might not get one The Lions screwed up when they let Prater go and they have actively been searching for a kicker for three years. They haven't been riding with at Money Badger at all, he was on practice squad in December.

It was fine that Shanahan took the points twice. They didn’t lose because they took the points.

I tend to agree, they seem to want to get their stars / difference makers in the draft. If they did go big on a FA I’m more likely to think it’s a pass rusher. But I doubt they do either.

              • I'd argue that while kicker isn't a high priority, it makes the list this year over many other needs and we should use a draft choice to try to improve the position. -- especially considering that there are several particularly good ones available.

Last year, the needs list was extensive and kicker was way down the list in priority. Now, our needs list is mostly about depth, so upgrading a starting kicker from below-average to at least average is higher on the list.

Here's my off the top of my head needs list:
                - Starting Corner, preferably CB1
                - IOL depth or possibly starter (for Jackson)
                - Edge rusher, preferably multi-down
                - Kicker
                - WR rotation player, preferably with size and speed
                - OT & DT depth
                - RB & TE depth (practice squad guys)
                - QB3 & Safety depth

This list is also why I think there's a chance that Holmes would bid big for Sneed. Sign him, and then the draft lets us use higher picks to fill all the other needs. It would have a real domino effect on improving our team.

                  • A rookie kicker coming in and being better than Badgley right away is no guarantee. If you’re committing to a rookie, you better be prepared to ride the roller coaster.

                    • NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah and ESPN’s Matt Miller held media conference calls this week and identified several players who would fit the culture built by Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes in Detroit.

                      • I think Sneed is getting tagged, because the tag on Jones would be 32 million. Most likely they get a deal done with Jones then tag Sneed.

At this point I think the ideal FA would be something like this

                        Resign Jonah Jackson
                        Josh Reynolds

                        Sign Kendall Fuller CB
                        Jonathan Greenard DE
                        Will Lutz K

Then possibly depending on where they stand on the cap bringing back Glasnow OR Kevin Zeitler (if avail) on a 2 year deal?

Then going into the draft get IOL, CB, DL in some combination in the first three picks

2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR

                        • While the result there would be pretty good on the field I can’t see them paying for a top G, CB and DE. Those guys are all looking to cash in. Greenard in particular seems poised to get a big deal.

To be clear, I'm not advocating gifting the job. I'm advocating using a 5th round pick on a kicker and having them compete just like we do with any other position. Worst case scenario, we waste a 5th round pick, just like we would if we missed at any other position. Best case scenario, we add another name to the long line of great Lions kickers and are set for the next decade+ (and pay rookie wage for 4 years).

Decent chance that Badgely or Patterson would be available if the rookie wins the competition in TC and falls on his face.

Besides, I think Badgely is already a rollercoaster. I hold my breath on every FG & extra point.

It depends right now they have a ton of cap room (I think OTC has them at like 70 million after Walker cut). I think we will see a Goff extension before FA.

I think Fuller will be the choice at CB. He won't get top top money and I don't think he is seeing a 5 year deal.

Zietler is interesting because his market might be limited due to his age (36). And he might be interested in Detroit for a possible SB run. Then the IOL drafts doesn't have to start from Day 1. If Ragnow retires after next year you have your Guards set and that would ease the transition for a younger center.
