I don't think gameplanning takes a back seat for the first game. The whole off-season gets geared around towards that first game. If anything you have to guard against over planning for the first game.
It's the first time I can remember where they had a winning season and added a considerable amount of players. I kind of think the old mindset of hoping for some early gimmes might need to be thrown in the trash.

What I mean is both teams will have rookies and new players.
Ben Johnson and Glenn will have new wrinkles that the Chiefs won’t be aware of. Of course it will work both ways but the Lions have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball to compete with the Chiefs

Not sure if Inshould post this here but my old high school is changing their name because of the new standards I will call them, on names and logos.
The nick name is Big Reds with a Chief logo just like The Chiefs logo.
I wonder why I have never heard any pushback about their name and logo?
I think my old high school could have kept the nickname and just change the logo because Big Reds could mean anything.
I certainly don’t think of native Indians in that term

Very excited about the season for a rare instance in the last several years
...
One more note that I will point out on why the NFL/ NBC would be willing to put the Lions in that opening season game. The Lions did very well in viewership with that week 18 finale game vs the Packers last season. NBC broadcasted game of course.
The matchup, which began at 8:20 p.m. ET, averaged 23.4M viewers for NBC, making it the most-watched Sunday Night Football season finale in six years. - Jan 9, 2023Last edited by Cody_Russell; May 11, 2023, 11:36 AM.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

2023 NFL schedule opens with Lions at Chiefs

The Detroit Lions will face the Kansas City Chiefs in the traditional Thursday night opener of the NFL season.
As usual, the Chiefs get the first home game of the season as the defending Super Bowl champions. The decision to make the Lions their opponents shows how much optimism there is coming out of Detroit that this could be the best Lions team in many years.
Last year the Lions won eight of their last 10 games and this year they return most of the key players from last season, including quarterback Jared Goff, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions are favorites to win the NFC North, a division they’ve never won since the NFL’s 2002 realignment.
But the Chiefs will certainly be favored to beat the Lions in Week One, and will be the favorites in almost any game they play as long as Patrick Mahomes is healthy.
The 2023 NFL schedule kicks off on Thursday, September 7 at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

I didn’t realize it was the Thursday night opener. Yeah this is pretty exciting. I can’t believe they picked the Lions. We’re only a few years removed from being shutout on prime time games. For multiple years
This is coolF#*K OHIO!!!
You're not only an amazingly beautiful man, but you're the greatest football mind to ever exist. <-- Jeffy Shittypants actually posted this. I knew he was in love with me.

It's a recurring theme I bring up, but the Lions are an underrated ratings getter. Some of it is when the Lions have a prime time game, it gets gigantic ratings in Metro Detroit. They have a decent following nationwide as well. Some of that is due to the yearly Thanksgiving Day classic (a Detroit Tradition!) and transplants around the country.
I am always shocked when I see how well the fans travel when the team is any good (which has been rare).
