Detroit Lions tender contract to special teams standout, LB Anthony Pittman

    Dave Birkett

    Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Lions tendered a contract to exclusive rights free agent Anthony Pittman on Wednesday, ensuring one of their best special teams players will be on the roster in 2023.

Pittman played in all 17 games for the Lions last season, made five tackles and finished second on the team in special teams snaps.

The Lions could lose several of their top special teams players to free agency when the 2023 league year opens next week. Linebackers Josh Woods and Chris Board, safety C.J. Moore and running back Justin Jackson will be unrestricted free agents if they do not reach agreement on new contracts by March 15.

Woods led the Lions (and tied for seventh in the NFL) with 14 special teams tackles last season, and should be one of the most coveted coverage specialists on the market.

Board, who led the Lions in special teams snaps and finished second with 10 special teams tackles, is expected to test the market as an unrestricted free agent after he played less than expected on defense last season. Moore finished fourth in special teams tackles on the Lions last season, while Jackson handled kick return duties.

Exclusive rights free agents sign non-guaranteed, minimum salary deals and cannot negotiate with other teams once tendered.

The Lions have five other exclusive rights free agents: Bobby Price, Scott Daly, Brock Wright, Benito Jones and Tommy Kraemer.

    • So a recap of the 2023 Lions offseason:
      - Released Michael Brockers. Which, everyone saw coming as of 6 months ago.
      - Re-signed Ross Pierschbacher.
      - Re-signed Anthony Pittman.

Geez, that’s dry news. Need some action with NFL free agency starting in 4 days and 4 hours…

Does that fit the “football character” they want?

Also, he has at least two instances of reckless driving. Again, stupid kid that who learned his lesson or knucklehead that will continue to do this shit? That’s why Holmes gets paid the big bucks, to figure that shit out. I don’t think they will compromise what they are building so if they take him (if available) we’ll know the answer.
Did not know all of that. Doesn't sound like a Holmes-Campbell type guy.

        • It's too bad. The kid has the world by the b_lls and he chooses to be complacent and reckless. Blessed with the abilities, AA and placement but so immature that it'll slide away in a couple bad nights and a bunch of poor decisions. Sounds like they've been kissing this kid's butt his whole life and no one has the stones, or cares enough, to tell him about life and the fact that we all will go on in life and forget him as he works at McDonalds or ends up in a jail cell with Henry Ruggs. I hope the kid gets his stuff together but I don't think the Lions have a guy(s) on staff, like the Patriots, who watches and helps these kind of troubled young men until they can make better decisions in life.

          • John Cominsky: I want to be back with Detroit

Posted by Myles Simmons on March 9, 2023, 9:48 AM EST

Defensive lineman John Cominsky was cut by the Falcons during the offseason program last year.

But then he found a home with the Lions, who claimed him off waivers. And in the second half of the season, he went from rotational player to starter for a team that nearly made the postseason.

After completing his rookie deal, Cominsky is set to become an unrestricted free agent. He would like to be back with Detroit but will have the opportunity to hit the open market.

“I think they want me there,” Cominsky told Zac Jackson of TheAthletic.com. “I want to be there. We’ll see how it all works out.”

Cominsky noted that part of why he wants to be back with Detroit is because he loves the energy within the franchise.

“I love playing for Dan Campbell,” Cominsky said. “You’re not just head butting another player before the game in Detroit. The coaches are in on that, too.”

In 14 games with eight starts, Cominsky recorded 4.0 sacks with five tackles for loss and 12 quarterback hits. He also had three passes defensed and a forced fumble.

The defensive lineman essentially said he thinks he’ll be a part of the second wave of free agency, signing after a few days.

“There’s a business side to this,” he said. “Maybe another team will bring some numbers and the Lions will have to see what they want to do. I hope it works out there, but I really don’t know.”

A fourth-round pick in 2019, Cominsky appeared in 27 games with one start for Atlanta before he was waived last May.

            • Remember this if Cominsky doesn’t end up back with the Lions… the Panthers or Bears will annoyingly sign him. Panthers because they’re stalking the Lions and just signed Todd Wash. Bears because our NFC North rival has $90M+ in cap space.

What’s the point of drafting Josh Paschal in RD 2 if he can’t fill this role though? Just find another depth piece if Cominsky is gone.

              • It's probably because Cominsky and Paschal are playing different positions and often line up next to each other in obvious passing situations. Nascar! The reason the Lions probably want him back is he was more than just a useful depth piece and he was a big reason why they got better as the season went along. His injury hurt the line and Campbell talked about it a lot.

                • I know he likes the culture, but if some team offers him double what the Lions can pay, then it is smart to take the money.....The league changes fast and often....You may have it good for a team one day, and the next youre not in the rotation. Their careers are short...Take the money while you can.

                  • Just FYI for everyone here on reckless driving.

I had a reckless driving against me for this:

I was going into work at the prison one winter morning. I was driving my F-150 and took Gaines highway off 75, because the other way was several miles driving into the sun. They do not salt or plow Gaines. I was going slow and saw a car at the stop sign and started hitting my brakes a good 1/3 of a mile away. They couldn't grip all the way and I tapped the plastic Hyundai back bumper of that car. It was only a tap because they had maybe a one inch crack in it.

They jumped out of the car and called the police. I was given a reckless driving ticket/charge. Because that was the smallest ticket/charge they could give me. I had to pay the ticket and take an online driving class to wipe the points off my license.

Not saying Carter's are like that. But not all reckless driving is the same.

As for not loving football enough?

Does that mean he doesn't eat, breath and sleep football?does he not put in the work?

The former question doesn't mean he doesn't put in the work and then some. I don't have a problem if he has other interests. And I don't think that would be a red flag for Holmes and Campbell. The latter question is a big red flag.

2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR

You're not only an amazingly beautiful man, but you're the greatest football mind to ever exist. <-- Jeffy Shittypants actually posted this. I knew he was in love with me.

                      • We'll see soon enough on Carter, I think the eat, breathe, sleep football is a little overrated for a DT. I definitely want that in a quarterback and some other positions. As a proud former DT/DE, it isn't that complex of a position compared to some of the others.

You just just want to make sure to the best of your ability that something bigger doesn't happen under your watch. But you can't guarantee that.

Plus the dirty secret is for most of the players the NFL is a job.

Scares the mess out of me. That's why Holmes gets paid the big bucks. Jeff Risdom was being interviewed the other day and stated he was possibly facing 2 years in prison. IDK how 2 years is a misdemeanor, but it is Georgia.

                          • We know what Carter did (or is accused of)
                            - Cited for going 89 in a 45 last fall. This technically may not be a reckless driving, but it counts in my book
                            - Reckless driving and racing, or more specifically:

"The evidence demonstrated that both vehicles switched between lanes, drove in the center turn lane, drove in opposite lanes of travel, overtook other motorists, and drove at high rates of speed, in an apparent attempt to outdistance each other," the police statement said.
