  • The cap hit is all timing. Once all the other deals kick in Goff’s contract will look like a bargain. He drops to the 11th highest cap hit next year.

    • Lamar Jackson wants to come here I hear😀

      • FTR….his hit doesn’t really go down. He’s still gonna be right around 1/6th of our cap.

It’s still a really bad deal (relative to the ability of the player you’re paying for)…..it’s not a bargain. On any level…1/6 or the cap for a very average QB is not a good deal.

I have never loved his style of game…but that O would be something to behold.

          • I’m Team Goff, but for those who aren’t what are the realistic options for replacing him?

            • My son thinks we should go after Garrappalo in FA and take a QB to develop in the 2nd/3rd (he’s a richardson fan)…I don’t love it but don’t hate it.

I don’t hate the idea of rolling with Goff…at a much lower hit. 10m extra buys a decent RG in FA…or good LB…or CB…you get it.

I also don’t think you loose too much in going to a guy like mayfield (who I think has gotten a bad rap…performance wise)….there are a lot of mid level QBs who’d look good with a great OL, Great WR core, very good running game, and great OC. I think many of you underestimate everything that Goff has going for him….and what other avg QBs could do with these resources (at a lower price tag).

I know a few wins gives everyone warm fuzzies…but QB is a position we could wring more out of.

Ironically…the thing I like bout Goff the most is one of the things I hate about him: He plays with complete lack of ego

That’s great at times…he’s doesn’t try to force passes into tight spaces and doesn’t throw the dumb interceptions associated with overconfidence in his athleticism.

That’s bad….when you need your QB to make a couple of those big plays that aren’t easy.

He’s really kind of the QB equivalent of Jim Caldwell…boring and conservative. Wins with consistency not creativity…is never going to make the huge mistake, but is never going to make the huge play either.

but much like religion or Steve Miller band….while I see the appeal, I’m not waiting in line to see it.

              • Keep Goff unless you can find better, and even then, only if Brad Holmes and Company think they can find the next Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes or Peyton Manning.

                • Nick's not... wholly wrong... with his assessment of Goff.

Where he's wrong is that the Lions could reasonably get similar production for less. The number of QBs that merely don't make the huge mistake is a shockingly small one, and they simply don't come cheap.

I assume any team that is a contender is going to be spending a lot on the quarterback. You have to have a staff that is adept at finding talent in the draft and in low level free agency. It's very early, but I think the Lions have that staff. I'm not trying to scavenge the scrap heap to find a cheaper alternative.
Agree Loops. I don't think you're going to get a better QB. Cheaper you can get. Better I don't think so. I'm all for drafting a developmental QB in the 2nd or 3rd.
                    GO LIONS "24" !!

The price of QBs only goes up. So while his number isn’t changing, other guys are getting paid more. That’s how the QB market works.

By any measure, Goff has been a top 6-7 QB this year. If he continues to play that way, his contract is a bargain. Period.

Everybody wants the next Mahomes/Allen/Rodgers. Of course they do. But you don’t cut off your nose to spite your face because the Goffs of the world aren’t those guys. If the Lions want to roll the dice on a QB prospect this year, they have that option. But they aren’t jettisoning Goff to do so.

                      • Garoppolo is not an upgrade from Goff and will probably cost just as much as Goff anyway.

                        • Who’s gonna give Garappalo 30+m per year?

If we let Goff go….how any teams would be willing to give Goff 30m+ PY?

It’s a bad contract for a mediocre player. Which is why McVay paid us to take it off his hands.

                          • So you are willing to take a step back a qb to save a buck?

                            Fuck that.

                            • Wouldn’t be a step back.

you give Goff too much credit and the support around him not enough. CGVT…have you only watched the wins this year? If Goff was so star spangled awsome…we’d be a in a position to sit starters today.

It’s not so much that I’d be willing to take a step back as much as I’m not as comfortable with mediocrity as most of you.

                              • Jimmy G would be a huge step back. Hell, he lost his starting job in SF and they were trying to get rid of him.

And...the last time I looked Goff doesn't play defense. The early season defense is why they are not sitting starters right now, not Goff.
