  • Notre Dame steals Lions play for game-winner in Gator Bowl

It was less than two weeks ago when Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was being praised for a game-winning play call on fourth-and-1 against the New York Jets. The play saw the Lions put Amon-Ra St. Brown in motion to the right, drawing the eyes and attention of the Jets defense. In the meantime, tight end Brock Wright—originally lined up inline on the right side of the offensive line—faked a run block, then slipped out of the defense to the left side of the field, where the Jets had completely vacated.

The result was a 51-yard touchdown pass with under two minutes remaining. That would prove to be the game-winning score as Detroit held on to win 20-17 in a critical game.

Why do I bring this all up? Because it appears Johnson didn’t just get noticed and praised by the NFL world that week. His influence appears to have reached the college ranks, as well.

On Friday night during the Gator Bowl, the Notre Dame Irish pulled off a near-identical play with the stakes just as high: third-and-7, tie game, with 1:47 left.

        • Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

            • Some ugly numbers on Okudah:

"The bottom line is Okudah enjoyed a solid start to the season, but has struggled since. He now ranks 76th among all cornerbacks, according to ProFootballFocus. His coverage grade is 98th for the season. Since Week 11, his coverage grade ranks 159th among all players. Among players who have played at least 20% of their team’s defensive snaps, he’s bottom five."

              • Wasnt Okudah drafted mainly because he was the safest pick and most likely the one that could contribute immediately?

Okudah is looking more and more like a Bob Quinn whiff.

Give Okudah one more year, while drafting someone to potentially replace him, and if he struggles again next year, then replace him immediately and let him walk.

                  • Give him one more year, on the team. Meanwhile, draft a couple CBs to replace him and Amani high in the draft. Saving grace has been my guy Jerry Jacobs.

                    • As referenced on another thread, the Cam Akers bounce back makes me feel hopeful that Okudah can recover. These damned achillies injuries…
The Lions need to address CB in the offseason regardless. #1 need at the moment! At minimum, one of those top 64 draft picks should be a CB. If not, two picks. The double dip is in play!

Me either, but what has happened? Did he fall back into bad habit(s)?

                            • NFL The Case For Aidan Hutchinson To Be DROY

Based on the 16 games he’s started this year, Detroit Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson

                              Aidan Hutchinson

has made a really good case to win this year’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Through his first 10 games, Hutchinson was already matching the statistical pace of some of this generation’s best edge rushers through their first 10 games. Guys like the Watt and Bosa brothers, Khalil Mack, and Myles Garrett were all putting up similar numbers in their respective rookie seasons. In the six games since, Hutchinson has only continued to excel on the field on a consistent basis, further confirming that he’d gotten over his inconsistent ups and downs earlier this year.

                              • Unfortunately Sauce has been one of the best at his position. As much as I’d love for Hutch to win it, he won’t.

It’s funny no one is making a case for Thibs. I wonder what excuses they’ll make for him this year.
