Swift is already the second guy in terms of carries. He's never gonna be a guy that gets the bulk of a team's carries. He hasn't missed as much as you're acting like he has. You aren't going to replace him at the savings you get unless you hit in the draft. Where the priority should be finding a better every down bruiser first to fit your offense anyway.

He's missed nine games so far (who knows how many he'll miss going forward) and been restricted in number of touches for God knows how many more.

Again, when should we expect him to not be made of glass?

What he brings is nothing if he's on crutches or in the hot tub.

And the instant you bring in another RB1, you have a potential powder keg. If you're committed to getting a new RB1, you can't let the current RB1 linger around like a stale breeze.

You can hope you have a Garrapollo situation, but more likely than not, you have a Mayfield situation on your hands.

He has played well when healthy this year. He is sparked the offense. For 2 mil/yr even for 3 games is more than most people in that price range. If he can't stay healthy you tell him he is no longer RB1 and he can deal with it how he wants. Guys get that talk every year.

If Swift was a big cap hit or something I'd personally want him gone too. But the guy is cheap.

He's also cheap to get rid of. The question is if what he gives is worth the potential headache.

He's missed 7 games, 3.5 a year so far. They aren't even sure he'll miss any now but if he does its probably only the 1 or 2 before the bye. You are massively overselling how much time he's actually missed.

Again, he's not your workhorse anyway and he's cheap. Bouncing a guy of his talent because he misses a few games a year isn't going to improve your team.

He has put up 236 yards in 2.5 games, and an 8.6 ypc. He also has 8 catches for 77 yards. He has converted 3rd downs. He took a bad play call and pass in a last ditch effort to the house to clinch the Washington game. The kid is having a good year. Even if he is done, he production right now has far exceeded his salary. What should we do? Cut the guy and bring in someone for big money who is less productive who might be less fragile?

Swift is dealing with a shoulder injury. He is one of several players Campbell mentioned that is not slated to practice on Wednesday. The others are receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, receiver Josh Reynolds, center Frank Ragnow, tight end T.J. Hockenson, and offensive lineman Jonah Jackson.

Campbell mentioned that Reynolds is farther along than St. Brown in terms of their recovery.

Cutting him is way too extreme of an idea given the contract situation. Swift has short-term value in Detroit when healthy … if he can be relatively healthy for at least half of the season, it’s well worth ~$2 million.

However, it’s fair to say the Lions should start thinking about a long term solution. How about drafting a RB in the 3rd or 4th RD this time…the 2nd pick RBs usually don’t payout for Detroit.

That is crazy. We've had loads of guys taken at RB in the 2nd round. At least one of them must have been great?

What about Leshoure? Best? Jones? Abdullah? Kerryon?

RB is a position you should probably draft every other year anyway in that range (2nd-4th) given the short shelf life at the position and so few backs are worthy of that big 2nd contract.

I think we're at the point where we put Swift on permanent IR, then the waiver wire at the end of the season.

How much longer are we going to pin our hopes on a guy that can't stay healthy?

They could trade him right now for at least a 2nd. Even being slightly injured. Rbs get hurt all the time. There's a reason their NFL life averages at 3 years.

It's plain maddening that Swift can't stay healthy ... Jonathan Taylor took an every week pounding in college, does the same in the NFL ... and he plays every Sunday. Swift is a great talent ... but Taylor should've always been the pick
