  • Yeah I remembered a couple more looking like they went out of bounds short of the LoS. There should have been a few intentional grounding calls.

They had quite a few plays they just failed to make though that could have led to a W had they fixed their own errors. They aren't where they need to be quite yet but they are much closer than they were last year. At least it would seem so thus far.

    • Missing the grounding call was obvious but honestly I thought we got more calls our way than usual. Normally we’re royally getting screwed over

Let’s not get too crazy with the Ebroni references. Eric Ebron didn’t have the hands or the mental capacity (from what I can gather). They’re in 2 different leagues IMO and I’d choose Hock all day long.

Hock puts in the work and has the hands but I just don’t see him ever being in the elite status. I’d sign him up for a second contract but not in the elite contract demands. TEs aren’t easy to come by but at some point you have to even money out between offense and defense.

We have an elite OL. Decker and Rags are getting paid. Jackson is up next and Sewell won’t be far behind. If I’m choosing to keep the OL together or signing Hock I choose the OL

He was playing the rule. Which means if you're out of the tackle box, you can throw it away. As long as the ball gets to the line of scrimmage. The one egregious grounding I saw was when he threw the ball (while within the Tackle box) and bounced it short of the line of scrimmage. The refs stated there was a receiver in the area and there absolutely was not.

My issue is the same as when they drafted a TE that high. Do you really use the TE that much? I see it with KC, SF and maybe a couple more teams, but for the vast majority of teams they just don't use TEs that much. And more and more TEs that are talented are coming out of college every year. We drafted Mitchel in what the 5th round? He was the 7th or 8th TE.

No. I would have to take a hard pass on paying $15 mil/yr to a guy who blocking is less then average and we throw it to him 3 - 4 times a game. That doesn't seem like a good use of your resources when you need to fortify that D and get another talented WR in here.

Dan Campbell: League office admitted Eagles got away with intentional grounding

Lions coach Dan Campbell said today that the league office has confirmed a missed call by the officials on Sunday that benefited the Eagles.

Campbell said he asked the league to explain why Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts wasn’t called for intentional grounding on a first-and-goal play in the second quarter, when the Lions were pressuring him and he threw the ball into the ground. Campbell said the league admitted it should have been flagged, but that he couldn’t have challenged it at the time.

“We turned it in. They said they were wrong. But no, you can’t review that,” Campbell said.

The Eagles scored a touchdown on that series of downs, and if the flag had been thrown it’s much more likely that they would have had to settle for a field goal. In a game the Lions ended up losing 38-35, that potential four-point difference was significant, and it’s unsurprising that the Lions aren’t happy about it.

Yeah but there were 2 in quick succession that didn't appear cross the LoS.

In the pocket you don't even have to get it to the LoS, it just has to be in the realm of a legal receiver. But that was much worse because there wasn't any player near by Lions or Eagles.

I’m totally with you there as well. I didn’t want us to draft him. I wanted defense that draft.

                            • Halapoulivaati Vaitai had back surgery

The Lions put right guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai on injured reserve last week with a back injury and an update on his condition from head coach Dan Campbell on Wednesday points to an extended absence from the lineup.

Campbell said at his press conference that Vaitai had surgery in Dallas on Tuesday. Campbell did not give a timeline for Vaitai to return to action.

“He certainly will be out for a little while here, but we’re not ruling out that he’s done for the season,” Campbell said.

Logan Stenberg got the start at right guard in the opener. Reporters at Lions practice noted that left tackle Taylor Decker, center Frank Ragnow, and guard Tommy Kraemer were out of practice on Wednesday.

With all of the injuries, Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that the Lions are signing Kayode Awosika off the Eagles practice squad. Awosika has played both guard and tackle since signing with Philadelphia last year.
