  • Not having Reader is the tough one. Most of the success they have had even with all the injuries is they have had strength of the middle with Reader, McNeil, Campbell, Branch, Joseph. Come on Jonah Williams, Broderic Martin and Pat O'Connor.
The Detroit Lions released their Week 14 injury designations and they will be without 4 players vs. the Packers, including Taylor Decker and DJ Reader.

I wonder how long can Aaron Glenn do his voodoo with the Defense.

If Mr. Glenn comes back next season, not only he needs a big raise, but Brad Holmes needs to trade and draft some more players that he - Glenn- can coach up and mold into effective football players.

        • The Lions have not been to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since making 3 straight postseason trips in 1993-95

As far as I know he’s still listed as day to day

                        • Kaevon Merriweather, we hardly knew ye in Detroit.

The veteran safety was signed off the Lions practice squad by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday after reports came out on Tuesday. Merriweather had just recently signed with the Lions, joining the team's practice squad on November 21st. He did not appear in any games with the Lions.

Merriweather rejoins the Buccaneers, where he played the first two seasons of his career. The Bucs have a rash of injuries of their own, with as many as three safeties potentially out for Week 14. Merriweather's familiarity with their defensive scheme and special teams experience led Tampa Bay to poach him from Detroit.

Because he was signed directly off the Lions practice squad, Merriweather must spend at least the next three weeks on Tampa Bay's 53-man roster.

I was wondering if that was going to happen.

                              • Kerby Joseph's historic season a testament to his development, Lions' foresight

                                Paywall article.

As far as we know, Lions head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes can't see into the future.

But if anyone was ever going to accuse the duo of having a magical crystal ball that allows a peek into what's to come, the draft selection and subsequent development of safety Kerby Joseph would be a good place to start.

Joseph, taken in the third round in 2022, has had a rapid rise in his third season with Detroit, so far collecting seven interceptions through 12 games in 2024. That's the most any Lions player has had in a single season since Darius Slay Jr. posted eight in 2017. No one has reached nine since Jimmy Allen in 1981, and Lem Barney in 1967 was the last to achieve double digits.

Since Kurt Schulz in 2000 (also seven), no member of the Lions has had more interceptions through a season's first 12 games than Joseph. Not bad for someone who changed positions in college, considering Joseph played receiver at Illinois before transitioning to defensive back.

"When they drafted him, he was a raw talent," Lions safeties coach Jim O'Neil said last month. "But the vision was exactly what he has become, and he still can be so much better. His ability to track the ball and the natural angles he takes to the ball and the ability to go high-point it and finish it is special. It's a special skill.

"He was a former receiver at Illinois. (He's used to) deep-ball drills, and he's a classic DB that loves to play catch. That stuff comes easy for him."

Joseph started off hot with a takeaway in four of his first five contests this season, and he's sprinkled in three more interceptions since. He's also up to 56 total tackles and has an overall defensive grade from Pro Football Focus of 90.9, good for No. 1 among all safeties in the NFL and No. 6 among all players.

"He was always really quiet when he first got here; he wouldn’t say a word," Campbell joked on Nov. 18, recalling what the often-energetic Joseph was like as a rookie. "Kerb has grown at the safety position. He was raw. He had not really played much defensive football. He was a receiver … but he was an instinctive player. He had these instincts for the football, he kind of figured some things out without being coached very much."

With injuries littered all over Detroit's defense, Joseph has been a consistent piece in the back end next to fellow safety Brian Branch. Even when Joseph is not bringing down interceptions — he couldn't get one at the Colts on Nov. 24 or against the Bears last week, the first time this season he's had back-to-back games without a takeaway — he's still been active with near-picks and plays on the ball.

"What you’re seeing now is the growth of this player now going on three years," Campbell said. "He’s growing into the position; he’s understanding the safety position. He understands how he can manipulate the quarterback by the disguises with himself but also (with) Branch.

"And that’s what you see. You see a … good athlete who wants it, who’s worked at it (and) is growing into a … good safety. That’s a credit to him."
