Turner wasn't that special at Michigan. It's nice that he's done well in OTAs & minicamp, but that means nothing. If you're trying to win the Super Bowl, you don't want to put your season in the hands of a rookie who had a mediocre college career as his total resume.
If this were 2 years ago, might be a different approach. Turner needs to go to a developing team willing to take a chance on a young unproven kicker.

I'm not an expert on structuring practices for training camp, but in all my years watching football, teams need 2 kickers in camp. Three is a crowd. Badgley is the veteran with a limited leg that they trust from 45 and in
You can kick all you want in practice, but it doesn't mean shit unless you can succeed under the bright lights. Turner might have the stronger leg, but I think they want at least one kicker that is proven in the competition.

Normally when you grade an off season it is in regards to the upcoming season. You might have an opinion on the contract that it is unwise, but it helps the Lions cap wise for the next two years. They have filled most of their needs, they have upgraded the defensive backfield by a lot. I can't recall being as positive in June about the off season as I've been with this one. They didn't bring in some other huge bookend on the other edge, but that's about it.
That writer's alternative to the contract where you are doing non-exclusive tags for three straight is at best pennywise pound foolish. Nobody does this nonsense for good reason The closest we have seen with this is Cousins with Washington and it was a.disaster for the team.
