His moves starting last year have all been very selective. Building for both now and for the sustainable future.
As I've said many times before, Holmes tells you EXACTLY what he's going to do. Some will just go on with their own narrative and ignore it. It's remarkable, to be honest.

    • According to Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press, Badgley successfully hit two long field goals, from 53 and 60 yards, during the team’s situational drills.
That's all well and good but Bates has been doing this in game time, on the field and against an opponent. This makes a big difference.

      • Oh, I am certain the Lions feel they have their kicker for 2024.

I also think it's a big mistake. Their complete unseriousness in upgrading the kicker position is probably the only thing I strongly dislike about Holmes's team building method.

        • Love to be able to hit from 60. I feel like 55 yards on occasion is enough.

Money Badger has been working on distance… Seems like 50 ish was the old line. Id be curious on his 50 yard makes how far the ball traveled past? What was he good from on his hits?

          • He had the 53 yarder against the Rams in the playoffs that was absolutely huge....He misses that and the Lions probably dont win that game.

            • A way to look at Badgely as the Lions Kicker, why it's probably a roster-building strategic decision to not invest more:

              1. Badgely is as good as any NFL kicker in everything except field goals more than 53 yards. Even on those, he's only marginally worse
              2. Dan Campbell follows analytics, so he avoids long field goals because they rarely increase your odds of winning.
              3. Badgely costs $1M/yr. Above average NFL kickers cost $4M/year

Do you really want to take $3M out of the annual salary cap for a marginal increase in the ability to kick a long field goal, something you'll only be doing 3-4 times per season, instead of using it on other positions?

Okay ... but in reality, they seemed scared to put kickers out there for long FG the last few seasons ... some choices were pretty obviously because of that. Yeah I'd rather have Hanson or Prater for the money than that ... so they don't have to play limited

If Badgely is better now so be it ... he'll prob get paid

                • If Det had Bates and he got shaky on short ones he woukd be gone fast.

I think Dan see the investment in the offense and would rather go for it on 4th to get closer. Minny kick haunts him.

                  • With a deep roster and top players locked up long term, there's plenty of substance to the thought that the Lions could be consistent contenders in the long-term future.

                    • Interesting the Lions over/under for wins this coming season is 10.5...I guess that is mainly due to the schedule than anything else.

He's not shy about blocking. I think he's in for a breakout year.

Goff needs to learn what routes he likes and start practicing them. It would be cool to see Jamo demand a double or take the top off of a defense.
