Penix has a great arm, and carried a team in a way that McCarthy was never asked to and the Wolverines in fact seemed to actively avoid.
But I was not expecting the Falcons to take that shot after handing $100 mil to Cousins.
That's my problem. Penix seems like a QB that should be plug and play now. Maybe one week rookie season, then you get the Penix that Penix is always going to be. This is a Vikings pick, a Raiders pick, almost anyone in the top 15 not named the Falcons. I could think that Penix is the next Manning or Mahomes, it doesn't matter if he goes to Falcons. The pick is wasted. You either purposely wasted ~70-80 million or you wasted the player you could have picked instead and there is no middle ground. If you need Penix before year three then you were already going to be in position to get a rookie QB that would put you in a better spot financially.

It’s accurate that JJ McCarthy wasn’t asked to carry Michigan often from 2022-2023. That’s just the Harbaugh way though. Harbaugh went back to his San Diego/ Stanford/ 49ers roots with being a more physical team and pounding the ball through the running game during the 2021-2023 turnaround. Add in the fact that Michigan had elite defenses and efficient running games in that era. JJ will have to prove himself in a different system in the NFL, but I’m confident he has the talent to do so based on eye test. He has the physical talent, a good arm, and character to flourish. So many ‘wow’ plays in the limited opportunities he had in the Michigan passing system. Also, JJ was unleashed in some big games when Michigan needed him. Such as 2022 Ohio State and TCU (minus the stupid pick 6s). If JJ didn’t suffer a severe lower body injury vs Penn State that is hardly talked about, he would have had more opportunities in close out 2023.
Some people might be shell shocked with what Harbaugh does to Justin Herbert due to his scheme … and you know what? Chargers will definitely win more games. The Greg Roman hire and Joe Alt draft choice indicate their strategy.

Its what kinda makes the draft crazy..>Teams will make moves that no one expects...I doubt there was a mock on the planet that had Penix going to Atlanta at 8....Its also why a player like Arnold was still available at 24.
The Falcons made a choice you only make when you are high, you know the one, where you think your stupid and terrible idea is the greatest thing anyone has ever said.
I am a fucking genius when I'm high. I've got great business models. Example. Imagine you need any service - paint job, roofing, auto repair, anything. I've got a group of guys who will do an immaculate job. 10x as better as anyone else. And a fraction of the cost. What's the catch, you ask? No catch. Just... when they're done, they gonna beat you up a little bit. I call it "Beat yo' ass services." You can also opt for a payment plan and they will come out monthly and punch you in the mouth.
"Yeah, we just... we don't want them to go. So that's our motivation."

If you think about it, Detroit used their first 4 picks to fix the CB situation.
1. Arnold (using # 73 and # 29)
2. Rakestraw # 61
3. trade for Carlton Davis # 93
The only thing like this I remember happening was in 1981 with the 49ers
1. Ronnie Lott
2. Eric Wright
3. Carlton Williamson
5. Lynn Thomas
All started/played the next year when SF won the Super Bowl.
