Yeah, because they kept a guy who went 8/8 from 50+ that year.

    • My wife keeps asking me why they don't get a better kicker. Answer is it's not so easy, you only truly know you have a kicker until he performs with live fire. Until they find one, it's going to be a handicap.

      • Kicker in the NFL SHOULD be an easy to fill position. How are there not 32 guys in America who wanna make a few million a year for kicking a ball well ... there should be a ton of great kickers who can handle it ... but there aren't

There was NOTHING stopping the Lions from looking and trying out people WHILE they had one. Hell, that's how they found Prater to begin with, while Hanson was still on the roster.

At the end of the day, I just don't think Campbell or Holmes put much emphasis on the position. They figured they'd mostly be going for it on 4th down in those situations where a big leg could potentially get them three, so they let Prater go. Then Campbell found himself in such a situation, and realized it's a LOT harder to slap his nuts on the table than he thought.

It cost them, and it's going to keep costing them.
I think you are forgetting the reign of David Akers.

And they'd do the same if had Prater now. They'd let some young talent walk in favor of ol reliable. Then he'd retire the next season and you'd be left in the front/middle of your contending window searching for a kicker. I'm not saying we are a better team without Prater. I'm saying I'd rather do that search now.

              • This is where the Gonz argument came from, he always wanted to be cheap on the kicker and argued they should have moved on from Lion Legend Jason Hanson.

To me if you are rebuilding, a good kicker is really important because odds are you are going to need one to squeak out some victories while you are rebuilding.

                • Hanson played 5 more seasons (missed 1/2 of one with an injury) and made 84% of his FGs, including 73% from 50+.

                  • Keeping Hanson was the right decision, keeping Prater was the right decision that a rookie GM screwed up. Winning games matters. Plus Holmes didn't look for the next young kicker, he went directly into the free agent market to get Randy Bullock, who promptly floundered.

                    • If anyone is interested I started a new Weekly Pick'em round without the elimination. It's on the same thread since the other round ended.

What money? The lions have one of the cheapest defensives in the league.

Hutchinson is the 40th highest paid DL(25th DE) in the league, Brockers is next at 47 (19th DT), Harris is at 57(34th DE), then the next 3 are in the hundreds and 2 of them haven’t played a game this year.

It seems like they were putting all their hopes on Hutchinson, Onwuzurike, and Paschal

Wasn't there a parade of awfuls before they got Prater?

Watching college football this season… seems like there’s at least a dozen kickers better than the Lions kickers.

For example off the top of my head. The kicker from Maryland drilled a couple 50 yarders like it was nothing.
