  • Yeah, I think before the final year of Patricia, I actually had a moment where I was like “wow, I’m probably going to die before I see any kind of success for the Lions…”

      You/we still may.

      • True, but I feel good about the current direction. Knowing Quinn had wasted the last few years of Stafford’s career here made it feel worse.

Basically I was arrested for a food fight that consisted of me slinging Mac and cheese. In my own home.

                • Hilarious. I've got some great stories.... but they are a lot longer than that!

I had a couple of cops knock on my door one time. I opened the door expecting my friend, and one cop was standing there, another witha flashlight at the bottom of the steps.... and he aske me 'What's going on?'. I was flabbergasted. Was I supposed to say, 'Hey man not much brother. What's up with you?'. Do I follow that up with a secret handshake of some kind? Seriously never been more confused.

Long story short... I was re-arranging my living room, all the furniture was in the middle of the room, and somehow (I think) my cat managed to dial 911 on the phone that was sitting on top of my guitar amp. Seriously, at one point the cop pointed at the cat and asked, ''Could he have done it?''.

I'll excempt any arrest stories from the record for now.

                  • As we head toward the 2023 NFL season, who are the dark-horse candidates for MVP? Adam Schein has some interesting names on his list, including a wide receiver and a 26-year-old quarterback who is already on his third team.

                    MVP odds: +4000

I'm a Goff fan and 2023 Lions believer. Goff was the second-best quarterback in the NFC last year, behind only Jalen Hurts. That's not an outlandish opinion at all. It's the truth. Just ask my colleague Marc Sessler, who watched all the QBs VERY closely in 2022 and ranked Goff as such himself.

Now, while I believe the Lions can break through into the playoffs, I don't think they'll be true Super Bowl contenders. And while I like Goff to enjoy another fine season under brilliant young offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, I don't think he'll rank among the NFC's top two quarterbacks again this fall. Partially because it appears Dan Campbell's team could be looking to run teams over with a road-grading O-line and overhauled backfield.

Long story short: Goff deserves a spot on this ranking, but he's the darkest dark horse here.

                      • Normally they only ask teams who weren’t in the playoffs year earlier. Oh yeah Lions weren’t. Just seemed like they were. Lol
I think the series has jumped the shark.
The lions had to much focusing on the coaches and not the players.
I personally didn’t give a fuck about the coaches yelling at each other.

                          • Lions sign second-round pick Sam LaPorta

Posted by Myles Simmons on June 15, 2023, 2:47 PM EDT

                            USA TODAY Sports

The Lions have taken care of some business with a member of their rookie class.

Detroit announced on Thursday that the club has signed second-round tight end Sam LaPorta to his four-year rookie contract.

LaPorta was the 34th overall pick out of Iowa. He caught 153 passes for 1,786 yards with five touchdowns in his collegiate career, including 58 receptions for 657 yards with a TD last season.

The Lions faced a reset at tight end after trading T.J. Hockenson to the Vikings last year. The club also has Brock Wright, Shane Zylstra, James Mitchell, and Derrick Deese at the position heading into training camp.

                            • Report: Lions were approached about a Hard Knocks sequel

Posted by Mike Florio on June 15, 2023, 12:49 PM EDT

The Lions aren’t one of the four teams that can be compelled to submit to Hard Knocks this year. But they’re one of the 28 that can, in theory, be persuaded to volunteer.

The Detroit News reports that the Hard Knocks powers-that-be inquired about a sequel to last year’s stint by the Lions, via PrideOfDetroit.com.

The Lions have not accepted the invitation, and they don’t seem to be inclined to do so.

Implicit in this development is the possibility that the league/HBO have asked other teams to consider doing it, even if they can’t be compelled to do it.

The Bears, Commanders, Saints, and Jets can be required to submit to Hard Knocks this year. All but the Commanders have publicly said they don’t want to do it.

The Commanders become an awkward choice, given that it’s impossible to tell the story of the team without telling the story of outgoing owner Daniel Snyder, who could officially make his exit at or about the same time the league approves the sale to Josh Harris.

It seems as if the league is currently scrambling to find a willing participant. A side deal might need to be cut, whether it’s hosting the draft or a Super Bowl or whatever.

Or maybe the league just needs to say to one of the four eligible teams, “The rules are the rules.” And then pick one.

                              • James Houston: My goal is to get Lions to trust me enough to be more than a pass rusher

Posted by Josh Alper on June 16, 2023, 9:11 AM EDT

It took James Houston some time to find a place in the Lions defense as a rookie, but he made the most of the chance once it came.

Houston was a sixth-round pick who wound up on the practice squad after failing to make the team out of training camp. He was elevated to the active roster in Week 12 and recorded two sacks to kick off an unexpected run of success as a pass rusher.

Houston had eight sacks while playing 140 defensive snaps in the final seven games of the year and that puts him squarely in the team’s plans for the 2023 season. The size of his role in those plans isn’t set in stone, however, and Houston wants to convince the powers that be that he can do more than just rush the passer.

“For me, I’ve got to get on the field,” Houston said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “I don’t know what that looks like, but I got to figure something out. Just like last year, it was just like they didn’t really know where to put me. I feel like it’s kind of similar, the same way. They don’t really know where to put me, and so I’m kind of that guy, hopefully I can be a chess piece and not too much of a liability, I guess, where I really can only play one position, where you can move me in different ways and put me on the field. So that’s really my goal, to get the team to be able to trust me enough to get to that point.”

Charles Harris and Julian Okwara are also going to be vying for snaps at the same linebacker spot as Houston once the Lions get back to work at training camp this summer.
