Notes: Calvin Johnson offers advice to Jameson Williams on handling adversity

    By Kellie Rowe

Sitting down with FOX 2’s Ryan Ermanni on The Nine, Johnson said it’s unfortunate that Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was suspended for violating the NFL’s gambling policy but adversity is a part of life.

“There’s always going to be adversity in anything that you do, even if things are seemingly right, there’s always going to be some level of adversity. But it’s really how you interact with that adversity, how do you come back from that adversity? Do you allow that adversity to hold you down or do you push up, do you thrive, do you stand back up. It’s all about getting back up, no matter how many times you get knocked down, you just gotta keep getting back up and you’ll find success,” he said.

Williams spoke publicly about the incident on Thursday and nearly echoed Johnson’s advice.

“Adversity comes, and it’s just how you handle it,” Williams said. “It’s always about how you handle it, and how you come out, and things like that. I’m a person that’s going to come out on top regardless, that’s just how I think. Just a little bump in the road, hopefully I’ll be back real soon.”

Also in the interview on FOX 2, Johnson mentioned his relationship with the Lions is growing more positive by the day, saying they have had “more and more frequent discussions.”
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

5 Lions players + multiple staffers fired involved with gambling rules violations.

Obviously we don’t have the details, but it’s clear something wasn’t effectively communicated here. I’m assuming the Lions cleaned this up since hearing about the rule violations.

          • Apparently the LIons are being investigated for another gambling violation? They didnt give much information but said it was a player that didnt play a prominant role last year.

So of ALL the players in the NFL, the Lions had five players for gambling violations and the Commanders had one. I find that hard to believe unless the Lions HR staff (or whoever it is that does these trainings) really dropped the ball.

                • They also fired othe employees, not just players.
So that tells me that those employees whether football staff or office staff may had had an influence on these players.
It wasn’t just some rogue players doing their own thing. They had inside influence that other teams didn’t.

                  • This could get interesting

The Cardinals released DeAndre Hopkins on Friday, months after the All-Pro wide receiver first surfaced as a trade candidate. Several teams figure to consider Hopkins as a free agent, but barely any actually pursued him via trade, according to Sports Illustrated, with only the Billsand Chiefs briefly engaging in "substantive talks" with Arizona.

Both teams backed out of talks for financial reasons, per Albert Breer, with Hopkins carrying a lofty 2023 price tag on his previous Cardinals contract. The Chiefs had initially "made progress" in accommodating Hopkins' salary cap number, but the Ravens signing free agent Odell Beckham Jr. to a fully guaranteed one-year, $15 million deal reportedly "blew that progress up."

With Hopkins now free to sign anywhere, Breer speculates the Bills and Chiefs are even more unlikely to land the wideout. The two contenders "talked directly to Hopkins, and liked him," according to Sports Illustrated, but aren't necessarily suited to win a bidding war on the open market.

The Panthers, Lions, Packers, Texans and Ravens are all teams who could explore additional WR help and have more cap space available. The Patriots had also previously been linked to Hopkins and figure to be more logical suitors now that the receiver is a free agent. Only the Buccaneers, meanwhile, currently have less 2023 cap space than the Bills and Chiefs, per Over the Cap.

                    • Could the Bills clear up cap space by sending us Ed Oliver? They’d shed 10 mil for the upcoming year

                      • I think this depends on what Hopkins wants…

If he just wants a shot at a ring, he can sign with the bills/chiefs for dirt cheap.

If he wants the most money, he can sign with the panthers/packers/Texans.

But if he wants a little bit of both…the Lions are the only game in town.

                              • Tracy Walker expects to be fully cleared for Lions camp

Posted by Josh Alper on May 29, 2023, 3:27 PM EDT

                                USA Today Sports

The Lions added several defensive backs to the roster in free agency and they’re also on track to get safety Tracy Walker back after he missed almost all of last season.

Walker led the team in tackles in 2021, but tore his Achilles in Week Three last year and missed the rest of the season. Walker is working with the team during OTAs and he said he expects to be back to full activity when the Lions get to training camp this summer.

“It feels great to be back,” Walker said, via the team’s website. “I can’t hide the emotions, you know? It’s a blessing. I’m very excited. Honestly, I missed it. It’s hard to explain. It was cool I got time to spend at home with my family but at the end of the day I missed ball. I missed coming out here being around my teammates and being the leader that I am.”

The Lions will have C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Cam Sutton, and Emmanuel Moseley to go with Walker and Kerby Joseph in the secondary this year. Walker said he’s excited about what the future holds for the group and believes that their work will help the Lions are “make a lot of noise” once the regular season gets underway.
