Lions agree to terms with the Jacksonville Jaguars to acquire K Riley Patterson via trade

    May 25, 2023 at 04:24 PM
Allen Park, Mich. – The Detroit Lions announced today that they have agreed to terms with the Jacksonville Jaguars to acquire K Riley Patterson via trade in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick. Additional trade terms were not disclosed.

In addition, the Lions waived WR Keytaon Thompson, who joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia following the 2023 NFL Draft.

Patterson returns to Detroit after one season with the Jaguars, where he converted 30-of-35 field goals (85.7%) and 36-of-37 extra points (97.3%) for 126 points scored in 2022. In Week 16 against the New York Jets, he was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after making four field goals and an extra point for 13 points scored.

He spent the 2021 season with the Lions, where he connected on the most consecutive field goals to start a career (10) in franchise history. Patterson originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis with the Minnesota Vikings in 2021 and also had a stint on the New England Patriots' practice squad that season. For his career, he has converted 43-of-49 field goals (87.8%) and 52-of-53 extra points (98.1%) for 181 points scored.
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

    • Did Patterson get an actual leg grafted on while in Jax?

      • I guess that’s about recognizing a mistake in choosing Austin Seibert over Riley Patterson. Then Patterson actually has a good season for the Jags in 2022. Jags swinging for more upside and distance potential with McManus?

Glad to read the reports about Big V and Onwuzurike. More progress when compared to the last update.

Brady Breeze too 👀. I’ve been rooting for him to turn into something productive.

        • So let me see if I got this straight...Denver waives their kicker and Jags sign him.....Jags were ready to waive Riley but Detroit offered a trade instead? I guess they felt someone else might claim him? I thought Patterson did a fine job two years ago but he doesnt even have Badgelys leg...Very strange.

          • Patterson and Badgley are in a lot of ways the same guy. They are more than reliable enough inside of 45 yards, but you might as well punt or go for it if you're asking them to go much deeper than that.

Which... is fine? Just not sure why Holmes would have traded anything for another guy like they already have signed.

Yeah, this one has me a bit baffled for sure.

Traded a 2026 conditional 7th for Patterson. If he doesn't make the team, Detroit will probably get their pick back. If he wins the battle, only gave up a 7 for a K.

                  • I dunno if it makes more sense... but more that it's nothing that's going to bite the team in the ass either way. Guess the Lions really want to make sure they have the right soft-footed kicker, I suppose.

Yeah it makes sense. I’d have preferred a trade with Denver to land McManus

                        • Dan Campbell on new kickoff rule: I hate that we continue to take away from the game

The Lions were one of the teams to vote against this week’s proposal to place the ball at the 25-yard-line if there’s a fair catch called for inside the 25-yard-line on kickoffs, but they didn’t have enough company to keep the league from adopting the rule on a one-year basis.

Given the Lions’ vote, it was no surprise to hear Lions head coach Dan Campbell’s negative take on the change on Thursday. The rule change is expected to limit kickoff returns and Campbell’s comments focused on the potential to lose something that’s been an integral part of the game.

“Highly frustrating, it’s very frustrating. But, look, I don’t make the rules,” Campbell said, via Christian Booher of SI.com. “That’s a new rule, and we’ll live by the new rule. We’ll find a way to adjust, adapt and still get what we want. I hate that we continue to take away from the game, that’s what really worries me. If we’re not careful, it won’t replenish at one point. But, listen, it’s the rules. We’ll make do, and we’ll adjust.”

Campbell isn’t the only coach who has expressed displeasure with the change, but they’ll need a few more teams to change their votes in order for things to revert back to the old way of doing business after the 2023 season.

                          • I really don't understand how this "takes away from the game." If you still want a guy to return the kick, he can. The only thing this MIGHT stop is forcing opponents to return kicks that are perfectly dropped in between the 1 and the 5 with absolutely perfect kick coverage so that he gets hemmed in at the 20. So much bellyaching over a scenario that happens maybe once every other week.

                              • One component I just thought of when it comes to the rule … Sometimes the kicking team will tack on a 15 yards due to a personal foul penalty. Teams would then typically try to pin the receiving team deep on the kick. It makes that penalty situation irrelevant. There doesn’t seem to be punishment for a team committing a personal foul on a PAT or 2 PT try. Unless I’m missing something here with the rule change …
