  • and this week we get:

    - Lions schedule release tomorrow. With leaks and such over the next 36 hours. I’m just hoping for a later bye week. Week 1 vs Baker Mayfield could be awesome because I want to ensure the Lions have an opportunity to embarrass him. Screw Baker…

    - Lions rookie mini-camp Friday-Sunday. Get to see photos of the rookies in Lions uniforms. Wonder if Sorsdal will get snaps at OT, G, or both. Probably both…

The Lions have a starting quarterback. They also now have the heir apparent to Jared Goff, having drafted Hendon Hooker in the third round.

Hooker, who is rehabbing from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, is not expected to play this season.

“Really, this is a redshirt year for him,” Lions coach Dan Campbell told Chris Long on the Green Light Podcast, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “He’s got to get this leg right first, and then he’ll learn under Jared, and then let’s see what happens. If he can eventually become your two or maybe down the road, later on, it’s more than that, but it’s going to be a long time.”

Hooker, who injured his left knee in a Nov. 19 game against South Carolina, is doing low-gravity running and recently resumed taking dropbacks. He has said he is not putting a timetable on his return.

The Lions likethat Hooker, who is 25, is older.

Now, he gets a chance to sit, watch and learn from Goff, who was kept in the loop by the Lions that they might draft a quarterback.

“To be able to get him where we did — we traded back twice and we were still able to acquire him — we felt like that was, everything played out just the right way for us,” Campbell said. “We were excited, and to your point, yes, Goff is going to handle it well. He knew. [General Manager] Brad [Holmes] had called him, and he’s great. And he’ll help this guy just learn and grow.”

It helps that Hooker is 2 years away but it sounds like Goff is a professional about it. Which isn’t unexpected, Goff has been nothing but a fantastic leader and role model since he landed in Detroit.

It shows why Holmes and MCDC didn’t look at him as a throw in part of the trade. He’s been fantastic for us

          • The Detroit Lions announced on Wednesday that they have signed defensive lineman Christian Covington.

Covington is an eight-year veteran, and the Lions will be the sixth team in his career. At 6-foot-2, 300 pounds, Covington is capable of playing anywhere along the defensive line, though he does the majority of his work in the interior. He does his best work as a run defender, as he only has 9.5 career sacks and 21 QB hits.

            Championship!!

              • Seems to be reminiscent of when the Lions signed Devin Funchess last year after the draft. Cheap JAG-ish veteran brought in as a camp body. Can make a roster depending on injuries, but hopefully that’s the the case with Covington.

I would imagine McNeill, Buggs, Martin, and Jones are all above Covington on the depth chart come training camp. Onwuzurike a total unknown and wild card. I’m counting on nothing with him.

                    • Hooker has a lot of Trubisky vibes with the throwing to one side of the field shit. Doesn’t make any reads at all. Whatever, he was a QB in the 3rd so that’s a fine gamble, but dude airmails and throws into the dirt layup throws.

I couldn’t believe how terrible he was on basic level shit last season. It’s just not there. He’s the Lions Killian Hayes. His ceiling is end of roster type.

He's 25 and they don't want him to see the field.
By 26, if he hasn't become the outright backup (and that is based on knowledge of the offense as much as it is ability) - he's pretty much done.
By 28, QB's with a lot more exposure are usually relegated to career backup status in this league.

                        • I don’t get it, either. Dude went 3rd round for a reason in a league starving for QB talent. He went there for a reason. He wasn’t a steal. That was his ceiling.

                          • He went there because he tore his knee up. If he was healthy he certainly isn't available in the 3rd round.

                              • I feel nervous and excited about that rumor all at once. Really tough game to win, but if the Lions miraculously win that game… the national respect would continue to build. Plus it’s always nice to get 10 days to prepare for the week 2 opponent.

Perhaps it’s better to have 4 months to prepare for Mahomes when compared to 1 week.
