So if people said the Lions had ~$21M in cap space a few days ago… that leaves the Lions with what, ~$28M? Something near that.
OTC has them at 26, but the Glasgow contract is not there yet.
Detroit Lions salary cap, contracts, bonus money, dead money, and cap savings for every player

      • Voided years cant be a good thing......They are in win now mode but will pay for it down the road....Someone like Vitai just cut and draft his replacement...Theres no sense taking cap hits down the road.

        • As long as the Lions don’t go to the extreme end of this voided contracts spectrum (like the Saints), it’ll make me feel better.
Seems like the Lions are being pretty smart with it. Isn’t out of control at this time.
For a team that can compete this year, that’s fine.

          Thx.

I just saw Justin Rogers mentioned ~$19.7M in cap space, which is similar to Spotrac’s estimate that takes rookie contracts into account.
So basically, the Lions have cushion to make another move if they want to…

          • The voided years do not count for much in total. Not really a big deal so far.

            • Does the number in that tweet include the Vaitai restructure? That’s like 8m from what I’ve read

              • That tweet should include Vatai's restructure. OTC has it at 26 free with Vatai's restructure. Rogers has it at 18 but is already subtracting the the rookie contracts. The rookie pool should be around 11 million, but only about 8 million should count against the cap.

For references, the Lions went into the training camp with about 10-15 million in available space. They should be close to done now until after the draft.

                • I’d think extensions come into play with this cap space. The concept of planning ahead would be a welcome change.

                  • Yep, Jackson and Goff are the obvious candidates. That wouldn't happen until after the draft. There could be one more splash if it there was a bargain free agent deal, but that could happen anytime from now until training camp.

Halapoulivaati Vaitai takes pay cut to stay with Lions

Lions right guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai will play another year in Detroit after agreeing to a pay cut.

The Lions and Vaitai have agreed to reduce his base salary from $9.4 million to $3 million for the 2023 season and make 2024 a void year, according to multiple reports.

That gives the Lions some salary cap relief and gives Vaitai a chance to have a good season in Detroit this year and then hit free agency next year, a year earlier than he would have. The Lions likely would have cut Vaitai if he hadn’t agreed to the pay cut.

The 29-year-old Vaitai was a 2016 fifth-round pick of the Eagles who has undeniable talent but has struggled to get on the field and stay on the field consistently. Last year he missed the entire season after suffering a back injury in the preseason finale.
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

I heard a rumor started right now days ago, on this forum, by someone, that the Lions are rumored to be trying to trade for Aaron Donald.

4 years ago I would have liked to have seen the Lions pursue him....not at this point in his career.

                          • Lions linked to every big name DT!! Why not?
Quinnen Williams, DeForest Buckner, Aaron Donald, and Jeffrey Simmons. Let’s get them all.

The only crazy DT trade that I view as realistic is for Ed Oliver. Unlikely, but you never know. At least we all agree that the Lions need at minimum one more DT… of which they most likely address in the draft.

Well none of the current DTs on the roster are good at getting to the QB.....Its what puts Jalen Carter front and center....I can see why the Lions would take the risk, and I can see why the Lions would NOT take the risk on him....One of the more intriguing prospects (good and bad) in quite awhile.

I don’t know how I feel about that one. It would depend on how much of his salary we retain. I’d rather use that 20 mil to reup some of our FA. That swinging a helmet thing that last year crazy town.

On the flip, man would he change our DL. A 2nd rounder? What would we give up?
