Simply turning next year’s salary into a bonus (and not even extending the contract) would bring his ‘23 number down by almost 10M….sure you’re kicking the can, but if Goff continues to perform he’ll get additional years next year to spread out that cap hit.

Not saying they should do that…but it would be super easy to get Goff’s cap hit under 30M.

I think they should only do that if there’s a reason to create the money (I.e. a player becomes available that they really want).
The numbers will work out. Goff showed his worth. He'll be extended at a reasonable price.
    GO LIONS "24" !!

To me the big thing is an expensive QB (even at Rodgers expensive) doesn't seem as limiting as it used to. Their pacing has been in lock step with cap increases, doesn't seem like the other positions are. As bad of a contract Watson got, the guarantees is really the problem, and the fact that they paid that to a serial assaulter who wouldn't have played for almost 2 seasons before he saw the field. Considering the amount of dues Vick had to pay before he could earn a real contract again, its pretty shameful.

But overall I don't think its really that limiting. Goff could get 35 million a year and I don't think it will hurt the team that much. Specially if Holmes keeps up with the hot hand as far as the draft is concerned.

While that’s great for the Lions why on earth would Goff sign something like that? There’s so many needy QB teams and Goff has been fantastic. Why would he sign some shitty deal to stay in Detroit with nothing long term? Players want stability and he’s get it elsewhere

        F#*K OHIO!!!

        • Give the guy more than 10 million bucks a season FFS. He needs stability. You want him turning to muggin’ n stealin’?

          • I'm ambivalent on an extension for him this off-season, but he's been more than a placeholder

            • If he’s truly their guy long term they’ll get something done eventually. But Holmes probably learned from the Rams experience that you don’t rush to throw the bag at the guy. I think it’s far more likely they get a deal done during or after next season - assuming they pass on QB in the draft and Goff is playing well next year.

Worse fine than for shoving a trainer providing care to an injured player? Really?
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

                • I like to think that the Lions are targeting next year's QB crop. There's quite a few relatively "under the radar" guys that could be there to be had. For example, I was impressed damn near every time Penix played, and depending on how it pans out, he might just be there in the middle of the first (at least within reach of a trade up if needed).

                        • I was very bearish on Goff coming into the season because 2021 showed us all the wrong things. Throwing it away on 4th down, never taking shots, etc. I hope that wasn't a confidence thing because a QB's confidence should be invincible. Hopefully 2021 was just growing pains in the new system and lack of weapons. Goff did get better as 2021 went on and the Sun God + Kalif started stepping up along with him getting Reynolds off the waiver wire.

This year he played at an elite level.

The question is do we ignore the beginning of 2021 or do we take the average of the two years?
"Yeah, we just... we don't want them to go. So that's our motivation."
Dan Campbell at Green Bay, January 8, 2023.

Well he is still under contract so I would say give it another year and lets see how it plays out....Also he may not have his offensive guru, so we need to see how that plays out too.

I didn't (or tried to) have a deep opinion on Goff or Campbell. Probably shouldn't when you're coming off a 3-14 year. I just thought things would be clear after the season. When they started 1-6 my optimism was very low. I've thought the best thing for the team was for Goff to prove out and play like he was the guy. And he is.

But... Like every off season, there are people that spend it wanting to replace the QB with QB Jesus. When the truth is the team, the team, the team. He got better as the team got better. Good QBs get a lot worse when their team disintegrates.
