I don't know if you can get the cap hit under 30 million on an extension. It's probably easier next year.

I disagree vehemently that they’d have a hard time getting Goff’s cap hit under 30M…I think a child could do that. Simply turning next year’s salary into a bonus (and not even extending the contract) would bring his ‘23 number down by almost 10M….sure you’re kicking the can, but if Goff continues to perform he’ll get additional years next year to spread out that cap hit.
Not saying they should do that…but it would be super easy to get Goff’s cap hit under 30M.
I think they should only do that if there’s a reason to create the money (I.e. a player becomes available that they really want).

1) Goff and the Lions have been in discussions about an extension for a while, and it's just been on the down low because neither side wanted it to be a distraction, but they are still far apart on the numbers, so there's been no point talking about it externally.
2) Holmes is biding his time because he has someone else in mind, and as such there's been no real discussions at all.
It seems Scenario 1 is the most likely, but you'd think that sort of discussions would have been leaked at some point before now.

That makes no sense. The more contracts that are signed (especially by QBs) will just keep driving up his salary requirements. If they like him there's no reason for the Lions not to extend him.
If they like then sign himF#*K OHIO!!!

I have no problem keeping Goff around, I just don’t want to give him huge $. We need to do a contract which gives us outs. Nothing really longterm. He’s a placeholder type and that’s ok with our current roster. I want to be able to move on from him easily.
