Jared Goff on Jameson Williams: We’re moving right along, will only get better from here

Lions rookie wide receiver Jameson Williams has only played three games since being activated from the non-football injury list after his ACL rehab, so it’s not surprising that he and quarterback Jared Goff aren’t fully on the same page yet.

That much was clear on a deep pass that Goff underthrew to Williams during last Sunday’s win over the Jets. Williams was open and likely would have scored a touchdown, but the ball never got there.

Goff did hit Williams for a 41-yard touchdown in Week 14 and the quarterback said he feels like he is getting a better feel for what Williams can do as they get more time together.

“I wish I would’ve thrown it a little bit earlier,” Goff said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “I had to move in the pocket a little bit. That’s one missed opportunity I felt like throughout the game I was thinking about. But yeah, him and I are moving along. It’s much better than it was two weeks ago, with just understanding his speed and what he’s good at and what he likes. So yeah, we’re moving right along, and it’ll only get better from here.”

With three games left in the regular season, the Lions may not be able to maximize Williams’ contributions as a rookie but hitting on a deep ball or two wouldn’t hurt Detroit’s chances of extending their season into the playoffs.

The rosters for the NFL's first-ever Pro Bowl Games were announced yesterday, and there were several glaring omissions.

With only four receivers making each roster, multiple players would always be disappointed here. Still, you can make the case that St. Brown should have made the squad (just) ahead of Washington's Terry McLaurin.

St. Brown’s 90.5 receiving grade ranks fourth among all wide receivers in the NFL, with 57 of his 89 receptions resulting in a first down or touchdown.

Not in three weeks Forsh. That's the time he's had with him. AND Goff has a team he is trying to get synchronized and winning each week. He doesn't have the extra time to do singular reps with JMO.

Like I said before, it reminds me of his struggles with Chark earlier in the season. I think at some point the QB had to figure out to throw it a little further and the WR had to figure out to come back a little.

Dan Campbell: Panthers loss “best thing,” you do best work when your face gets kicked in

A three-game winning streak moved the Lions into a good spot in the chase for playoff berths in the NFC going into Week 16, but their hopes of advancing to the postseason took a serious blow in Carolina.

The Panthers got a win that boosted their bid for a division title while leaving the Lions in need of wins and help from others if they’re going to play an 18th game this season. Those circumstances would make any loss painful, but the fact that Carolina ran for 320 yards and picked up 570 yards overall in the 37-23 win made it all the more painful.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell believes there’s a silver lining to getting steamrolled the way his team did last weekend, however.

“Look, I’m just going to say this again, it stings,” Campbell said, via Justin Rogers of the Detroit News. “It’s awful. But man, it’s the best thing that could happen to us because I think no matter who you are, in whatever you do, some of your best work is when you get your face kicked in. . . . I do know, man, when your back is against the wall and you get trodded on and everything is at its worst, either you stay down there, or you get up, and you come back motivated and upset with calculated energy and aggression, and man, you go. And there is a purpose. So I think this is the best thing for us.”

A 3-12 Bears team waits for the Lions this weekend and that should probably help them live up to Campbell’s belief that the team can rebound with a win, but last Saturday’s result means that they’ll need an extended rally in order to get where they want to go this season.

It's funny ... if all of us here in the forum say it was the best thing because it shows them how much work they still have ahead, how they haven't arrived yet, and how the next few games will tell a big tale about who really belongs and who doesn't based on how they respond ... we're right, if not geniuses.

In reality ... it's the truth no matter who says it. Of course nobody ever wants to lose like that ... but maybe the best thing for THESE LIONS (the roster they have) was to get blasted in that game. Better than winning a squeaker based on a lucky play here and there ... if they have a DL that will be swiss cheese against the run ... they need to know it. If they can't run the ball with the guys they have ... they need to know it. Etc etc etc

I wouldn't say he has a "loser mentality" at all. And sure, as a young team, they needed that shot of Vitamin R.

But that doesn't change the fact that if they want to be a champion, that attitude is going to be one that has to go. They're going to be expected (and they will have to) bring their best every single week regardless of what happened the week before.
