  • Something like this Dell is probably the best of both worlds, but you'll have to pay a pretty large premium over a pure laptop or tablet.

I would say go with a tablet if you don't mind a small screen or having to get separate dvd-drives, peripherals, etc. The laptops will have more power and longevity, but you'll miss out on the touch screens/features.

    • Frank, my advice is to find a store that carries a Surface and see if it meets your needs. See if the cover keyboard thingie™ is workable for you and if you can live with Windows 8 RT.

Be realistic about the portability thing. Do you plan on taking it everywhere with you or would you be happier with a desktop PC and a decent smart phone? I'm not trying to sway you either way, just throwing stuff out there.

I can't really recommend one solution for you since how we use our computers is likely quite different. I use a combination of a PC, an Ultrabook (XPS13), a great smartphone, and a Kindle.

      • BTW, it appears that Best Buy and Staples (along with the Microsoft store, which supposedly does exist in certain areas) carry the Surface in case you want to give it a test drive.

        • This Asus seems pretty nice too.

Edit: Switched the link to the higher spec one.

          • Frank - if you go tablet I will recommend an iPad because that's where most of the development for applications is focused. If on a budget recommend eBay as you can get a used one for substantially cheaper $

              • Thanks Deb, I will check out the Surface at one of those stores. I don't even know if it's a Surface I want, I was thinking that kind of tablet as opposed to the iPad. The portability thing with the keyboard is really appealing to me and what I'm looking for.

                • Sorry Coop, but I've gotta agree with Gonz here. I can't imagine trying to use an iPad to do actual work like writing documents and making power point presentations and stuff.

Don't you need a computer to use the iPad? They sync up using iTunes I thought, right?

                          Wireless update

Just moved this ip2 to OS 6.1 (?) by wireless update over the weekend

This is my wife's work ip2 btw. I would NEVER spend an earned dime of our hard earned dough for any apple product.

                            • Not sure what Apple product your SM has but I just read this from Apple

Update your device wirelessly (available in iOS 5 and later)

                              • Yeah just a wireless router is needed. So you can update to remove the superior google maps (which you'll then just reinstall as a 3rd party app now).
