I haven't stumbled on this particular one yet, but have encountered some that sound similar.
Thank you Mike Honcho. I will keep that on file for future reference.

Apparently my FIL's PC is so infected he can't even get to the internet so his daughter decided to take it to a box store to have them fix it for him.

As for the Googles cloud works, very interesting future for those that want to get rid of big hardware clutter.

AVG is passable if you can't afford to buy software. But I've had parents get infected with spyware/malware with AVG on their system (and up to date) and most reviews state that it's the least effective against such threats.

I've been a longtime Symantec user with great success. I can't really speak to the resource issue that Dave mentions since my Vista PC is pretty souped up. But through the years I've never had any resource issues with it. I use their "Internet Security" product and am happy with it.
Totally agree with you about AVG.

As far as Symantec thier product works fantastic, but ULF is right on both counts. It is a TREMENDOUS system hog (though two years ago was a vast improvement, I haven't experienced last years version), and you need to download a special uninstall tool to properly uninstall it.

I have found the best balance of good preotection and not a system hog while being easy to use is suprisingly Windows Live Onecare. Techies will hate it, but for the average Joe I have found it to be the best.

No problem GONZ. Good luck to them on the big box store. I give a 98% chance that they will just tell him he needs to wipe his hard drive and start fresh. Thats always their easy answer, and it gives them the opportunity to charge to back up the hard drive (probably $69), reformat ($99) and reinstall windows (another $69).

The downside I can see with the Gdrive is speed of the internet as it relates to picture and music files. Also cost.

Agree. Last time I got a nasty virus that wouldn't go away (I use McAfee), Spybot did the trick.

            • Rommy, are you still in the market for a TV? Saw this in a blog that I read:

While flipping through a Money magazine, I ran across a often-repeated piece of advice about buying an HDTV: that the size of the TV you should buy is determined by how far you plan on sitting from it, not just bigger is better:

Which always makes me beg the question - why not just put your couch closer to your TV? You could buy a much smaller set and save hundreds of dollars. I guess it?s just another by-product of buying a house that?s too big. You need more furniture to fill it, and now also a bigger TV to see from across the room.

In addition, doctors now say that sitting too close to the TV is not bad for your eyes. Well, I guess it can?t be worse than most of us sitting inches away from an LCD screen all day long already.

              • How many people sit 5 feet away? And you need a 39 inch TV if you do? How did anybody survive on those 19" TV's in the day.

I have to think that the chart above was produced by someone trying to sell bigger TV's.

LOL! I have a 32" tv and am sitting about 10' away. It's plenty big enough.

That's what all men with small TVs like to think.

Bigger is better if your goal is to recreate the movie theater experience. I'm packing 90 inches at 10ft. At this ratio, Standard def TV looks horrible, DVD looks good, and HiDef (720p only) looks amazing. Honestly, the limit with HD source is not resolution but how big the screen can be before it starts to make your eyes scan back and forth to track the action, which can be a bit uncomfortable for an extend period of time.

Ironically, I'm satisfied with the screen size. My wife, however, sometimes wishes it were bigger.

My 20-inch monitor developed a shadow issue so I was in the market for a new one. Went to Dell's site and found a nice 23-inch model. Then looked around and found it here for $100 less and shipping was $3. It arrived yesterday and is just beautiful!!!
