My 9 year old daughter has tested and been accepted to take classes from Johns Hopkins summer accademic program for talented kids. The classes are on line and we are looking to enroll her in a class.

The problem we have is that my wife and kids will probably travel a lot this summer and we have to find a way for her to access the net while they are gone.

We have cheap assed cell phones that we wouldn't be able to get internet and tether to a laptop and ATT service (we are happy with ATT...). We are not eligible for an upgrade. So it looks as if our best option would be a card for the laptop to get connection, but that would cost us $60 a month with a two year contract(our current phone plan cost us a total of $60).

$720 a year is a lot of coin for mobile connection.

      Any suggestions?
I hear ya CG, I recently added a aircard for my daughter to use at college, but in her case it's really worth it. It would cost 40 plus for RR in her apartment and she wouldn't have the mobility which she uses a lot.

      • My FIL had his PC hit by the SYSBAR.EXE virus.

Does anyone here have a solution for this bug?

I am trying to find more detailed info.

Symantec security research centers around the world provide unparalleled analysis of and protection from IT security threats that include malware, security risks, vulnerabilities, and spam.

            • I'm 100% certain that this man who is 80+ years old and is a devout man of God wasn't surfing porn.

But thanks anyway for the insult.

Are you sure about that. I have a guy like that at my work and I swear he mostly uses his devoutness to A.) to get forgiveness for generic wrongness and B.) to get forgiveness for the really bad thinkings.

But if you read my response (which you probably didn't since I am on your ignore list) he got the virus from an email and the person he got it from probably had outlook installed. Sadly the one Virus company (Mcafee) that gives details on how to remove without their software doesn't have any listings for this this variant.

Try using Malwarebytes (download here). You can also try Trend-Micros online virus removal at antivirus.com.

I haven't stumbled on this particular one yet, but have encountered some that sound similar.

                        • Gonz, I am sure you have noticed but the first major piece to Googles cloud computing is out of the bag. GDrive doesn't sound too revolutionary so far but you can see where they are heading with it.

                          • I've used Trend Micro's web product before and it's been OK, but I'd stay away from their desktop piece. We had it on one of the computers here and it was a major pain in the ass - one of those programs that flags everything, gets in the way all the time, and hogged resources. I finally figured out how to completely uninstall it a few months back.

I use AVG (which has a free edition) and find it to be a decent product. I used to have Symantec years ago when it was decent, but it became a giant piece of hogware around 2003 or something. Good luck uninstalling that shit too...
The only thing missing from that Marvin Jones touchdown reversal is that it wasn't a first round playoff game.

                            • Trend Micro's enterprise stuff is stellar. But I have no experience with their home user products.

AVG is passable if you can't afford to buy software. But I've had parents get infected with spyware/malware with AVG on their system (and up to date) and most reviews state that it's the least effective against such threats.

I've been a longtime Symantec user with great success. I can't really speak to the resource issue that Dave mentions since my Vista PC is pretty souped up. But through the years I've never had any resource issues with it. I use their "Internet Security" product and am happy with it.
