Please support the Forum by using the Amazon Link this Holiday Season

Amazon has started their Black Friday sales and there are some great deals to be had! As you shop this holiday season, please consider using the forum's Amazon.com link (listed in the menu as "Amazon Link") to add items to your cart and purchase them. The forum gets a small commission from every item sold.

Additionally, the forum gets a "bounty" for various offers at Amazon.com. For instance, if you sign up for a 30 day free trial of Amazon Prime, the forum will earn $3. Same if you buy a Prime membership for someone else as a gift! Trying out or purchasing an Audible membership will earn the forum a few bucks. And creating an Amazon Business account will send a $15 commission our way.

If you have an Amazon Echo, you need a free trial of Amazon Music!! We will earn $3 and it's free to you!

Your personal information is completely private, I only get a list of items that were ordered/shipped via the link, no names or locations or anything. This does not cost you anything extra and it helps offset the operating costs of this forum, which include our hosting fees and the yearly registration and licensing fees.

Stay safe and well and thank you for your participation in the Forum and for your support!! --Deborah

  • Talk of the Nation - Science Friday on NPR had a story about computer viruses last friday that was quite good. You could probably download it if you are interested.

The program I'm talking about "ExamSoft" basically locks out everything on the computer. I thought that's why it conflicted with the virus programs (because it thought examsoft was a particularly malicious code). But is that wrong thinking?

    • That type of app might require the entire AV to be shutdown to run correctly. I am not familiar with it, but what I would do then is look at a copy of VMWare or Virtual PC.

You could load the examsoft and run it in a virtual session and it would only effect that session, you can still what you do in your other session.

      OR

Just run that housecall service once in a while when you go to bed etc, if you run unprotected for extended periods of time.

Disagree. The best case, and most secure environment, is using a Mac.

        No.

Well, since Coop already cue'd the evangelical Mac fanboy response ...

7 years of completely healthy computing - on Windows. In 15 years of use I've gotten one nasty.

          • Larsky - hate to say it, but the MAC world has issues to. Windows is targeted by hackers simply because there are more PC users running Windows than Macs.

No need to debate the whole Windows/MAC thing....

Like Tom, since the release of Windows 2000 I've minimal or no issues due to viruses or malware.

            • Only time I had a problem was when I let someone else use my PC, damn porno freak. So, yeah, those who know wtf they're doing with their PC should be fine. But that kind of proves the point that the PC has not been all that great for novices. It's just not easy for those folks to learn how to keep things safe, although Vista pretty much forces them to.

I imagine a Mac is more novice-friendly and less targeted by hackers.

                      • The consumer level versions of McAfee and Symantec are HORRIBLE. The corporate Symantec AV is great.

I have used AVG as well and for consumers I wouldn't recommend anything else...
