surprised no one's mentioned the iPhone - any buyers? I can't believe lines started forming Tuesday. While I can understand the appeal of the all in one gadget, Apple is putting much on the line. Whereas the iPod was pretty much a pioneer product in the portable music player market, the cell phone industry is different. It's not going to replace my 60 gb iPod, and calls won't sound any better than on my $50 RAZR. For it's mobile computing experience - why put a Yugo engine in a ferarri and why restrict the consumer market by only offering it through AT&T?
I don't know Coop, I think you're looking at it wrong. From what I've seen, Apple isn't going after the $50 RAZR market, they are going after the high-end Blackberry market. It's a pricey gadget for people that buy gadgets for their pricey-ness and their newness.
"This is an empty signature. Because apparently carrying a quote from anyone in this space means you are obsessed with that person. "
I believe it also does Wi-Fi - and WiFi hotspots are fairly ubiquitous.
As may be but you're still paying for the data plan....in the end, it's a wider screen video ipod with Internet access and a mini ipod. And a phone. Dropped calls aren't going to sound any better on it.
And the battery isn't easily replaceable either.............and no voice dialing...there was something else not supported too....
and if you are in range of WiFi, you're probably in range of a computer/laptop. weeeeee!!!!! I am at iwork, typing on my ikeyboard, looking at dual imonitors, typing with ifingers, eating an isnack, drinking some iwater...........after iwork, gotta go to teh ibank and cash my icheck, driving in my icar.

Considering it's a video Ipod and a cell phone together, it's a pretty compelling reason for those who carry both. 500,000 activations in the inaugural weekend shows it may just be you hating on Apple. The number would be higher but there were some issues with people who had numbers they weren't entitled to have couldn't activate service.
Timmah - it will be interesting to see how Apple fares in the cell phone market long term. Keep in mind I own two iPods so I'm not exactly an Apple hater. Now AT&T is a different story.....

There are a certain number of people that will buy anything just to be first or cool. Just the other day I was talking to a girl that asked me about Ipods because that is all she knew. She didn't realize that there are sometime other or better choices for what she need or wants. To lazy to do the research, just give me the Ipod name.
