Please support the Forum by using the Amazon Link this Holiday Season

Amazon has started their Black Friday sales and there are some great deals to be had! As you shop this holiday season, please consider using the forum's Amazon.com link (listed in the menu as "Amazon Link") to add items to your cart and purchase them. The forum gets a small commission from every item sold.

Additionally, the forum gets a "bounty" for various offers at Amazon.com. For instance, if you sign up for a 30 day free trial of Amazon Prime, the forum will earn $3. Same if you buy a Prime membership for someone else as a gift! Trying out or purchasing an Audible membership will earn the forum a few bucks. And creating an Amazon Business account will send a $15 commission our way.

If you have an Amazon Echo, you need a free trial of Amazon Music!! We will earn $3 and it's free to you!

Your personal information is completely private, I only get a list of items that were ordered/shipped via the link, no names or locations or anything. This does not cost you anything extra and it helps offset the operating costs of this forum, which include our hosting fees and the yearly registration and licensing fees.

Stay safe and well and thank you for your participation in the Forum and for your support!! --Deborah

      • I installed Vista Ultimate last night. Overall a pretty painless experience. Wow, it is really NICE. Very pretty.

            • Slif, we all have different priorities so I can't quite answer your question. It's worth it for me, but I'm a geek and enjoy investigating these things lol. It might be more of a pain in the ass to someone like you, I don't know.

              • IE7 is smokin' fast in Vista, btw. It was really starting to annoy me in XP, but now it seems very natural and speedy.

I'm still trying to find a Vista-compatible firewall. The built-in one is better than the one in XP, but that's not saying a whole lot. Let me know if anyone runs across a stand alone firewall that works in Vista!

                  • if the overheating just started and it worked fine before that, I'd guess that it just needs a cleaning to clear out the vents.

                    • Make sure the fan still works. If so, yeah just cleaning it may help enough. Also make sure it is in a ventilated area.

                        • Yep, Coop. The router does not stop rogue apps from phoning home, a firewall does.

                          • most have built in firewalls - but I'm guessing you're looking at specifically outbound port monitoring?

                            • Again, a router can not distinguish whether the outgoing traffic is something you intiated or not. A firewall can. If your pirated copy of Photoshop wants to phone home to Adobe and you don't have a firewall running, it will phone home. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see how a router would know to stop that.

or you can just let it crash and then it will cool naturally
