  • I could use a bit of help here.

All of a sudden I am getting regular correspondence from a relative that has eml extensions. I googled it to learn that it is an extension used by Outlook but do not seem to be able to find a download that would enable me to open these items.

This just started about a month ago and he has been sending me things for years but with other extensions I am more familar with.......XL, DOC, WMV, etc.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to teach an old dog a new trick.
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.

Are you sure he is purposely sending you these files. Sometimes these are worms. If indeed it is intentional outlook express (which is built into windows, although you may have uninstalled it) should be able to open it.

E-mail message saved by Microsoft Outlook or other e-mail program; may also contain an e-mail attachment, or file sent with the message. Note: If EML files will not open in Outlook Express, try the following:
        1. Open My Computer.
        2. Select Folder Options from the Tools menu.
        3. Click the File Types tab.
        4. Under Registered file types, select EML Outlook Express Mail Message, then click Advanced.
        5. Click Open, then click Edit.
        6. Type the following line in the "Application used to perform action" box:
          "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE" /eml:%1
        7. Click OK twice, then close the window.
EML files may also be opened in Internet Explorer since they are formatted the same as .MHT files; changing the file extension from ".eml" to ".mht" should cause the file to open directly in Internet Explorer.

        • I could use some help from my fellow geeks. I have completed all of my classes for my master's degree but still need to do my thesis. I originally developed a proposal around my old job. It was going to be about the investment needed toward disaster prevention and recovery. I have, of course, changed jobs since then. Now I'm a home-based employee who doesn't work in an IT department at all, so my thesis really can't be based on work. My master's is an MSA with a concentration in information resource management. I would love to do something about working virtually, but what kind of "research" can I do with that? Ugh.

Any suggestions are most appreciated. I'm so stuck.

Wish I could help, but all i can do is pass along sincerest wishes for a wonderful outcome.

            • Why would you need to work in an IT department? Is that a prerequisite or would it make it easier to conduct the research necessary?

              • No it's not a prerequisite. I just can't do the original topic I had planned.

                • Deb,

Does it make any sense to develop a thesis around employment in the virtual world vs the brick and mortar world? What methods are employed? What works, and what doesn't? Productivity measurements/tools. The costs/savings. Straight employment(benefits) vs contracting for a fee. Examples where it has worked, and not worked and why?

                  • Bim, that sounds like more of an human resources-focused project. Know what I mean?

                    • HR wouldn't touch it in my world. They would not know how to deal with it. But that may not be the norm elsewhere.

                      • Really? I don't think IT cares nor can measure the diff between an employee or a contract worker. That's an HR measurement. The technology behind telecommuting is an IT thing, though.

                        • Yep, really. HR doesn't have the expertise or desire to deal with IT measurements. And my IT folks would resent HR for trying.

                          • Deb:

A couple of rough, broad ideas...

A ran into these guys a while ago who specialized in tiered data storage. Something like RAM drives, RAID, and TAPE. When data hadn't been used for a while it would move to the RAID then the tape. You could still access the tape stored data it would just take a while to seek it - otherwise most the the commonly used data had really fast access. I thought that was a pretty cool setup - maybe a seed of an idea there.

Last week I read in a technical rag an article about, I forgot the technical term they used, but basically software as a service. In particular, Google vs. MS wrt online office suites. Apparently their models are quite different. Maybe some room for analysis there.

Finally, just check out 'the literature' for your field and see what's topical. If it's like my school you probably have online access to a literature database. Let me know if you need an article you can't find.

                            Good luck!

                            • A topic that I would think to be interesting for a thesis is capacity management. Its been my observation that companies are very reactive towards scaling their servers.
